Branford Boys’ Tennis Grabs Three Wins, While Boys’ Lacrosse Takes a Loss


Baseball

Baseball grabbed a pair of victories last week after slipping to start the week. The Hornets traveled to North Haven on May 15, falling to their hosts 16-2. On May 16, they bounced back with a 19-6 win over Shelton, and they picked up their second win at home over North Branford 9-6 on May 19. The team is now 7-11 for the season.

Boys’ Tennis

Boys’ tennis added a trio of wins before suffering a loss to close out the week. On May 15, they traveled to Wilbur Cross to hang a 7-0 loss on their hosts. Singles players Adam Albrecht (6-4, 6-0), Mason Porras (6-1, 6-2), and Alex Ferrara (6-0, 6-3) added wins in the victory. The doubles duos of Nirvan Paudgal and Matt Jour (6-0, 6-2), Luke Baylis and Mike Radzivnas (6-2, 6-1), and James Heier and Evren Akin (6-1, 6-1) also recorded wins.

The Hornets hosted East Haven on May 16, recording a 6-1 victory, and they hit the road on May 18, to defeat Career Magnet 7-0. Staying on the road for May 19, the team fell to Fairfield Prep in a 7-0 shutout. They are now 11-8.

Girls’ Lacrosse

Girls’ lacrosse snagged a pair of victories last week, putting an end to a single game skid. The team traveled to Shelton on May 15 in a 17-5 win before traveling to North Branford on May 18 in a close 11-10 win. The Hornets are now 7-9.

Softball

The tough season continued for Hornets softball. The team posted two losses, falling on May 15 vs. Lyman Hall, 13-9, and to North Haven on May 16, 14-0, The team is 2-18 for the season.

Girls’ Tennis

Girls’ tennis snagged a pair of wins last week before falling to snap a six-game win streak. They hosted East Haven on May 15, shutting out the visitors 7-0. In singles, Peyton Gaudreau (6-0, 6-0), Leila Omeragic (6-0, 6-2), Hana Omeragic (6-0, 6-1), and Erin Smith (6-0, 6-0) picked up victories. Evie Kaiser and Scout Engstrom (6-2, 6-0), Tate Jones and Julianne Henkel (6-0, 6-0), and Olivia Torello and Nunu Smith (8-6) earned doubles victories.

On May 18, the team hosted West Haven in a 6-1 victory. In singles, Gaudreau (6-0, 6-0), Omeragic (6-1, 6-2), and Erin Newlan (8-2) earned wins. The doubles duos of Kaiser/Engstrom (6-2, 6-1), Jones/Henkel (6-0, 6-1), and Smith/Torello (6-2, 6-1) recorded wins.

The team fell on the road on May 21 to Daniel Hand, 6-1. The Hornets are now 11-7.

Boys’ Lacrosse

Boys’ lacrosse took a loss in its sole game last week, falling to Amity Regional on May 16 17-1. The team is now 4-12 for the season.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

On May 16, the Branford girls’ outdoor track team traveled to North Haven for the SCC West Sectional Meet. They placed seventh overall as a team with 68 points. Lucy Moran took first in the 800 with a time of 2:21.65 and also in the 1600 with a time of 5:02.56 to set a new school record. Violet Marrandino finished in sixth in the 1600 (5:38.04). The 4x400 team, comprised of Joelle Budz, Glorianna Buckley, Sarah Nwagboli and Lucy Moran, placed second with a time of 4:10.88. In the 300 hurdles, Joelle Budz took third (48.54) and Ella Stone took third in the long jump (16-10.5).

Sarah Nwagboli placed fourth in the 200 meters (27.93) and Glorianna Buckley placed fourth in the 400 (61.71). The 4x100 team of Chayse Gueco, Glorianna Buckley, ZuZu Pont Strong and Sarah Nwagboli claimed fourth place (51.87). In the 4x800, Lila Wasiolek, Cecile Hazen, Hannah Jackson and Violet Marrandino took fifth place with a time of 10:49.71. Joelle Budz finished the 100 in sixth place with a time of 13.25.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Branford boys’ outdoor track team competed in the SCC West Sectional Meet on May 16 at North Haven. They finished in fifth place with a team score of 67 points. Those scoring for Branford included first place performances by Colin Donahoe (800, 1:59.77), Drew Schwartz (javelin, 162’2”), Enaji Muhammed (high jump, 6’3”) and Ryder Kropiwnicki (pole vault, 13’6”). Schwartz also finished second in the shot put (44’7”) and qualified for the CIAC Class MM State Meet. Fifth place finishes were achieved by Kropiwnicki (110 hurdles, 16.41), Muhammed (triple jump, 40’0.5”) and the 4x400 relay of Donahoe, Dominick Zdunek, Peter DiStasio and Sean Howard (3:38.23). Evan Bouley took sixth place (javelin, 144’7”). Also scoring for the Hornets were seventh place finishes by Kropiwnicki (javelin, 142’9”) and the 4x800 relay of Zdunek, DiStasio, Donahoe and Massimo Corrick.

The Junior Varsity athletes competed at the SCC Boys’ Novice Meet held at Amity High School on May 19. Those finishing in scoring position included Sean Healy (fifth place discus, 83’3”) and Jacob Tran (fourth place javelin, 98’4”). All three relay teams also finished in scoring position: 4x100 (fourth place, 49.99, Charlie Budz, Romeo Owusu-Boateng, Benito Kwadade & Alasdair Adsit); 4x400 (second place, 4:05.3, Kwadade, Budz, Owusu-Boateng & Supreme Shrestha); and 4x800 (fifth place, 10:50.52, Nolan Weted, Paul Lesyk, Mathias Verdesoto & Gavin Smiarowski).
