The North Haven football team hit the road to square off against Cheshire for a big-time SCC Tier 1 showdown on Oct. 28. The Nighthawks claimed a 10-0 victory against the Rams at Cheshire High School to improve their overall record to 6-1 with a record of 3-1 in the division this season. Cheshire moved to 5-2 overall and 2-2 in the SCC Tier 1 with the loss.
Junior Camren Thompson gave scored the only touchdown of the game when he rushed for a 31-yard TD with 2:40 remaining in the first quarter. Senior Declan Finkle kicked the extra point to make the score 7-0, which was how the game stayed through the second and third quarters.
With North Haven’s defense putting the clamps on the Rams’ offense, the Nighthawks made it a two-score game with a field goal during the fourth quarter. Senior quarterback Jeffrey Karavas completed a 33-yard pass to fellow senior Daniel Mark-Thomas to get North Haven inside the Cheshire red zone.
Facing a 4th down, Finkle came on for a 27-yard field goal and split the sticks to increase North Haven’s lead to 10-0 with 3:47 to play in the game. The Nighthawks stopped Cheshire on the Rams’ next drive and went on to get their sixth victory and fourth shutout of the 2022 season.
North Haven grinded it out in the ground game by rushing the ball 48 times for 208 yards and a touchdown in its win against Cheshire. Senior Brian Lastomirsky had 8 carries for 65 yards to lead the Nighthawks.
Karavas had 22 rushes for 50 yards, while Thompson ran the ball 3 times for 42 yards and a score for North Haven. Along with Karavas’s 33-yard pass to Mark-Thomas, sophomore Adam Pandolfi threw a 49-yard pass to junior Ryan Bernardo to aid the Nighthawks’ offense,
Junior Nick Harkins and Pandolfi both made 10 tackles on defense in the win. Senior Jayden Roby, Lastomirsky, and Bernardo each had 9 tackles.
Junior Connor Rapuano made 8 tackles to go with 2 pass deflections for North Haven. Senior Chayse Mangino and junior Brendan Ryan each had 7 tackles, while senior Michael Masto added 6 tackles on the night.
North Haven is currently ranked No. 3 in the Class MM Playoff rankings in which the top eight squads qualify. The Nighthawks are hosting SCC Tier 1 opponent Hand (2-5, 1-4) for their next contest at North Haven Middle School on Friday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. After that, North Haven will play a road game versus Fairfield Prep at Fairfield University on Friday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. The Nighthawks will then close the regular season by playing their annual Thanksgiving Week game against Amity at Amity High School on Wednesday, Nov. 23 at 6 p.m.
Boys’ Cross Country
Junior Nico Boyle finished in 14th place when he competed for the North Haven boys’ cross country team at the Class MM State Championship last week. The Nighthawks came in 13th place as a squad with 359 points scored in the state meet at Wickham Park in Manchester on Oct. 29.
Boyle recorded a time of 17:30 on his way to claiming 14th place for North Haven at the Class MM State Championship. Senior Tyler Wurm was next in line for the Nighthawks by finishing in 67th place with a time of 19:04.
Sophomore Matthew DeNardis recorded a time of 19:16 to finish in 77th place in states. Junior Anthony Signor finished in 88th place with a mark of 19:44, while junior Jack Greene finished in 113th place at 20:26. Senior Tai Moffat placed 122nd (20:43), and junior Cody Molyreaux finished in 162nd place (22:48) at the meet.
Girls’ Cross Country
The North Haven girls’ cross country team competed in the Class MM State Championship that was hosted at Wickham Park on Oct. 29. The Nighthawks scored 407 points as a team and finished in 15th place at the meet.
Senior Julia Cannon turned in North Haven’s top performance by taking 38th place at the Class MM State Championship. Cannon ran a time of 22:47 on her way to finishing 38th in the meet.
Sophomore Amalia Morizio finished in 74th place with a time of 25:06 for North Haven at states. Senior Payton Orosco crossed the finish line with a time of 26:00 and came in 88th place.
Freshman Lily Mineur finished in 101st place with a time of 27:16, and sophomore Grace DeNardis finished in 115th place by recording a time of 27:59. Senior Carina Esposito finished in 120th (28:44), and junior Jade Lewis finished in 127th place (30:21) for North Haven.
Girls’ Swimming and Diving
The North Haven girls’ swimming and diving team was represented by two athletes when the Southern Connecticut Conference Diving Championship took place at Sheehan High School on Oct. 29. Junior Meghan DeRubeis and sophomore Daniella Rapuano participated in the SCC’s diving competition for the Nighthawks, and both athletes turned in solid performances on the board.
DeRubeis finished in ninth place on behalf of North Haven in the SCC Diving Championship. DeRubeis posted a score of 331.00 for her 11-dive performance on her way to placing ninth.
Rapuano took 11th place for North Haven at the SCC diving meet. Rapuano finished with a total score of 324.15 for her 11-diving route en route to finishing in 11th overall.
There were 35 divers who competed at the SCC Diving Championship. Margaret Corso of Lyman Hall finished in first place with a score of 386.95 points.
North Haven is participating in the swimming portion of the SCC Championship at Southern Connecticut State University on Thursday, Nov. 3. After that, the Nighthawks will take part in the Class M State Championship.
Girls’ Volleyball
The North Haven girls’ volleyball team completed its regular season and then competed in the SCC Tournament last week. The Nighthawks took losses to Amity and Bristol Central in their last two regular-season matches and then lost a contest against Branford in the opening round of the SCC bracket. North Haven has an overall record of 12-8 as the team gets ready to play in states.
On Oct. 24, North Haven traveled to Woodbridge to face Amity and took a 3-0 defeat to the Spartans. Two days later, the Nighthawks were back on the road to face Bristol Central and lost the contest by a 3-0 score in their regular-season finale.
Then on Oct. 28, No. 6 seed North Haven hosted No. 11 seed Branford in the first round of the SCC Tournament and took a 3-0 defeat in the match. The Hornets won the contest with set scores of 25-16, 25-19, 25-20.
Junior Avery Berney posted 6 kills for North Haven in its SCC match versus Branford. Senior Sophie Vauiso finished the matchup with 3 kills and 2 blocks for the Nighthawks.
North Haven will be participating in the Class L State Tournament that gets underway on Tuesday, Nov. 8.
Girls’ Soccer
The North Haven girls’ soccer team hosted Hand for its last match of the 2022 regular season last week. The Nighthawks lost to the Tigers by a 3-0 score in their regular-season finale at North Haven Middle School on Oct. 24.
North Haven posted an overall record of 7-9 for the regular season this year. The Nighthawks will be competing in the Class L State Tournament that gets underway on Saturday, Nov. 5.
Boys’ Soccer
The North Haven boys’ soccer team played a road game against Hamden in its regular-season finale on Oct. 24. The Nighthawks took a 6-0 defeat to the Green Dragons in the matchup at Hamden High School. North Haven completed the 2022 regular season with an overall record of 2-14.
Field Hockey
The North Haven field hockey squad played a home game versus Hand to close out the regular season last week. The Nighthawks took a 3-0 loss to the Tigers in the contest at North Haven Middle School. North Haven finished the year with an overall mark of 4-12 this fall.
