The Guilford girls’ volleyball squad was victorious in all three of last week’s contests and is now sporting an overall record of 10-3 on the season. The Grizzlies posted shutouts over Hillhouse and Hamden before winning a five-setter against Jonathan Law to make for an undefeated week on the court.

On Oct. 11, Guilford hosted Hillhouse and won the contest by a 3-0 score. The Grizzlies took the matchup by the final tally of 25-5, 25-20, 25-15.

Senior Halle Krause recorded 8 assists to go with 5 kills and 4 aces for Guilford in the victory. Junior Emma Getrost finished the match with 6 kills for the Grizzlies.

The next day, the Grizzlies had a home match with Hamden and swept the Green Dragons with a 3-0 victory at Guilford High School. The Grizzlies won the match with set scores of 25-14, 25-17, 25-15.

Krause posted 11 digs and also had 8 digs in the win. Fellow senior Riley Mullett dished out 15 assists to go with 4 digs. Senior Corrine Puchalski had 6 kills with 5 aces and 3 digs to help Guilford get the sweep.

Then on Oct. 14, Guilford traveled to Milford to face Jonathan Law and eked out a 3-2 victory over the Eagles in the matchup.

Guilford is playing a road match versus Morgan on Thursday, Oct. 20 at 5:30 p.m. The Grizzlies will then be hosting Branford on Friday, Oct. 21 at 5:15 p.m., followed by road matches against Hand on Monday, Oct. 24 at 6:30 p.m. and Hillhouse for their regular-season finale on Thursday, Oct. 27 at 4 p.m.

The Guilford field hockey team played three games last week and notched three shutouts in all three contests to improve its overall record to 11-1-0-1 on the season. The Grizzlies blanked East Lyme, Sheehan, and North Haven in recent action and have now won nine games in a row, posting shutouts in eight of those victories.

Guilford started off last week by earning a 4-0 home victory versus East Lyme on Oct. 10. The Grizzlies went on to defeat Sheehan by a 5-0 score in another home at Guilford High School on Oct. 12. The following day, Guilford was on the road to face North Haven and claimed a 6-0 win over the Nighthawks.

Senior Grace Barlage led the Grizzlies’ offense by netting 7 goals during last week’s action. Senior Kim Evans, senior Ella Clarke, and junior Payton Root scored 2 goals each on the week for Head Coach Kitty Palmer’s team.

Senior MJ Santa Barbara and senior Gigi Meneo both scored 1 goal for Guilford last week. Junior Eliza Chamberlain made 4 saves to earn a trio of shutouts in net for the Grizzlies.

The Grizzlies are playing a road game against Branford on Thursday, Oct. 20 at 6:30 p.m. After that, Guilford will be back on the road to face Amity for its regular-season finale at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 25.

The Guilford boys’ soccer team scored a pair of shutout victories last week to boost its overall record to 9-1-2 this season. The Grizzlies notched shutouts over Hamden and Amity in recent action.

Guilford kicked off last week by earning a 2-0 road victory versus Hamden on Oct. 11. Then on Oct. 15, the Grizzlies hosted Amity and blanked the Spartans by a 1-0 final at Guilford High School.

Senior Sami AbuGhazaleh scored the goal of the game in the 65th minute to lift Guilford to its victory versus Amity. Senior Mark Michna had the assist on the goal for the Grizzlies.

Guilford has a home game against Xavier at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22. The Grizzlies will then be back home to square off with Cheshire on Monday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m.

The Guilford girls’ soccer team boosted its record to 5-6-1 on the season after picking up three recent victories. The Grizzlies earned wins versus East Haven, Lauralton Hall, and Career-Hillhouse in recent action.

On Oct. 11, the Grizzlies played a road game against East Haven and defeated the Yellowjackets by the final score of 7-0. Two days later, the Grizzlies hosted Lauralton Hall and claimed a 2-1 victory versus the Crusaders. Guilford finished off the week by earning an 8-0 home win over Career-Hillhouse on Oct. 15.

Guilford is hosting Sheehan for a contest on Friday, Oct. 21 at 3:45 p.m. The Grizzlies will then face Branford on the road in their regular-season finale on Monday, Oct. 24 at 6:30 p.m.

The Guilford football team hosted Bassick for an SCC Tier 3 matchup at Kavanaugh Field on Oct. 14. The Grizzlies posted a 60-0 shutout over Bassick to improve their overall record to 3-2 with a record of 3-0 in the division this year.

Senior Mike O’Brien ran the ball 5 times for 113 yards and 2 touchdowns in the first quarter for Guilford in the win. Senior Dillon Burlakoff had 4 carries for 49 yards and 2 TDs in the opening quarter.

Senior Alejandro Colberg-Martinez had 3 rushes for 20 yards and 1 touchdown for the Grizzlies in the first quarter of the victory. Junior quarterback Tyler Hilgert threw a 55-yard touchdown pass to fellow junior Jaco Corso. Freshman Alex Tafro had 6 carries for 37 yards and 2 TDs in the fourth quarter of the contest.

Sophomore Rocco Barbera led all tacklers with 9 on the night for the Grizzlies against Bassick. Corso had a forced fumble and an interception for Head Coach Anthony Salvati’s squad. Sophomore Kevin Smith had an interception to go with a 2-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

Guilford is on the road to face Jonathan Law for another divisional duel this week. The game kicks off at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 21 at Lawmen Stadium in Milford. Jonathan Law enters the game at 5-0 overall with a 3-0 record in SCC Tier 3 this year.

The Guilford boys’ cross country team finished its regular season by sweeping a meet at Wharton Brook State Park last week. The Grizzlies recorded a team score of 22 points to earn wins versus Lyman Hall (68) and Fairfield Prep (99) at the meet on Oct. 11.

The Guilford girls’ swimming and diving team put together another excellent week as the Grizzlies picked up two more victories to raise their record to 12-0 this year. Guilford earned recent wins versus West Haven and Shelton to maintain their unblemished record in the 2022 campaign.

Guilford began last week by earning a 101-67 road win against West Haven on Oct 11. Senior Grace Young claimed first place in the 200-yard freestyle (2:08.56) and the 500 freestyle (5:42.65) for the Grizzlies in the victory. Sophomore Kate Young finished first in the 200 individual medley, junior Sorina Cheng took first in the 100 butterfly (1:05.65), and freshman Aislin Cohen placed first in both the 50 freestyle (26.13) and the 100 freestyle (58.50) for Guilford.

Guilford’s 200 medley relay of Cheng, senior Rylan Jacobson, junior Sofia Tian, and Cohen finished in first place (2:06.15). The winning 200 freestyle relay made up of senior Charlotte Martocci, sophomore Isabel Torello, junior Isabella Blanco, and Grace Young finished with a time of 1:53.22.

Sophomore Evelyn Bertolini posted the fastest time of 1:14.32 in the 100 backstroke, which was contested on an exhibition basis. In two other exhibition events, Torello had the fastest time for the 100 breaststroke (1:18.58); while the 400 freestyle relay featuring Tian, Grace Young, Cheng, and Martocci also recorded the fastest time (4:14.03).

Two days later, the Grizzlies hosted Shelton and won the contest by the final score 93-80. At Walsh Intermediate School. Guilford received first-place finishes from Kate Young in the 200 freestyle (2:12.93), Torello in the 100 butterfly (1:11.07), Cohen in the 200 individual medley (2:22.78) and the 500 freestyle (5:33.15), and Grace Young in the 50 freestyle (26.80) and the 100 freestyle (57.23) at the meet.

Senior Ella Esposito took first place in the diving competition by recording a total of 217.90 points for the Grizzlies. Guilford’s 200 medley relay of Cheng, Grace Young, Kate Young, and Cohen also finished in first place (2:02.24).

For the exhibition events, Cheng finished with the best time in 100 breaststroke (1:17.30); as did Guilford’s team of Cheng, Blanco, Martocci, and Torello in the 200 freestyle relay (1:52.52); and the Grizzlies’ 400 freestyle relay consisting of Chen, Grace Young, Kate Young, and Torello (4:00.01).

Guilford has a road meet against Branford on Thursday, Oct. 20 at 4 p.m. The Grizzlies will then be back on the road to face the Fitch-Stonington-Wheeler-New London co-op team on Monday, Oct. 24 at 3:45 p.m.
