Nighthawks Notch 55-0 Win Versus Harding; Girls’ Swimming, Volleyball See Perfect Weeks

Football

The North Haven football team improved its overall record to 4-1 on the season after earning a convincing win versus Harding in a home game last week. On Oct. 14, the Nighthawks hosted Harding for a Friday night matchup and won the contest by the final score of 55-0 at North Haven Middle School, marking the team’s third-consecutive victory and its third shutout of the year.

North Haven dominated the ground game in its win versus Harding. The Nighthawks ran the ball 31 times for 354 yards on the night, averaging 11.4 yards per carry. Senior quarterback Jeffrey Karavas ran for 3 touchdowns and did not throw a single pass in the game.

The Nighthawks also turned in a stifling effort on defense in the victory. North Haven recorded 4 sacks and grabbed 2 interceptions on their way to shutting out Harding.

North Haven put the game away early by scoring 4 touchdowns in the first quarter and 3 more in the second quarter to take a 49-0 lead at halftime. Karavas scored on a 2-yard touchdown run just 1:27 into the game to put the Nighthawks on the board. Junior Eric Vetrano then kicked the first of his 6 extra points to give North Haven a 7-0 advantage.

Junior Trysten Dos ran for a 2-yard TD with 6:33 remaining in the first quarter. Two minutes later, senior Cam Thompson broke off a 50-yard touchdown run for the Nighthawks. Junior Adam Pandolfi rushed for a 32-yard touchdown with 2:33 to play in the opening frame and, following another Vetrano extra point, North Haven was staked to a 28-0 lead after one.

Karavas ran for a 6-yard score with 7:25 to go in the second quarter. Vetrano kicked the PAT to increase the Nighthawks’ lead to 35-0. When Harding got the ball back, sophomore Joe Mastroianni recovered a fumble and returned it 25 yards to the house for another North Haven score. Sophomore Ben Pizzano came on to kick the extra point, giving the Nighthawks a 42-0 lead with 4:42 remaining in the first half.

Karavas scored his third TD of the night on 14-yard rush with 1:01 to play before halftime. Vetrano booted the extra point to give North Haven a commanding 49-0 advantage at intermission.

Sophomore Brandon Stevens rushed for a 14-yard touchdown with 8:45 left in the third quarter to make the score 55-0 in favor of North Haven. That marked the final TD of the game as the Nighthawks went on to prevail in shutout fashion while posting their highest point total of the season to date.

Karavas finished the game with 7 carries for 72 yards and 3 touchdowns for North Haven. Thompson gained 88 yards on just 4 rushes to go with a touchdown in the victory.

Pandolfi ran for 37 yards on just 2 carries for the Nighthawks. Senior Brian Lastomirsky ran 3 times for 36 yards, sophomore Chris Cretella had a 32-yard run, sophomore Christian Mongillo carried the ball 4 times for 27 yards, and senior Daniel-Mark Thomas added a 16-yard run.

Karavas and senior Jayden Roby both had an interception for North Haven on defense. Thompson had a forced fumble and a fumble recovery, while Mastroianni also scooped up a fumble that he took back for a score. Senior Michael Masto and junior Alex Gaetano both recorded a sack in the game, as did Pizzano and Stevens.

Dos made 8 tackles to lead the Nighthawks in that category. Roby had 7 tackles for North Haven. Sophomore Michael Moran and sophomore Chris Kottage both had 6 tackles on the night. Lastomirsky, Thomas, Pandolfi, Stevens, and sophomore Tyler Dimauro contributed 5 tackles apiece.

North Haven is hosting Xavier for an SCC Tier 1 game on Friday, Oct. 21. The contest kicks off at 7 p.m. under the lights at North Haven Middle School. North Haven has a record of 1-1 in the division this year. Xavier is 2-3 overall to go with a record of 1-2 in its SCC Tier 1 contests.

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

The North Haven girls’ swimming and diving team claimed a pair of home victories last week to improve its overall record to 6-3 on the season. The Nighthawks earned a win versus Mercy and then notched a win over Lauralton Hall to make for an undefeated week in the water.

North Haven started off last week by recording a 92-84 victory versus Mercy in a home meet on Oct. 11. Senior Mikayla Rapuano took first place in the 100 butterfly (1:01.08) and the 200 freestyle (2:07.28) for the Nighthawks in the win. Fellow senior Alice Scalmani finished first in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.77) and the 200 individual medley (2:19.32).

Junior Makenzie Alogna won the 100 backstroke (1:11.48) in the win against Mercy. Sophomore Daniella Rapuano earned top honors in the diving competition (182.40) for North Haven.

The Nighthawks’ 200 medley relay of Alogna, Scalmani, Mikayla Rapuano, and freshman Giada Garafolo finished in first place (2:01.13). North Haven’s 400 freestyle relay featuring Mikayla Rapuano, Garofalo, sophomore Madisen Karavas, and Scalmani also claimed first place (4:07.71).

Two days later, the Nighthawks hosted Lauralton Hall and defeated the Crusaders by a 93-87 final at the Walter Gawrych Community Pool. Scalmani won the 100 breaststroke (1:13.16) and the 200 IM (2:17.74) for the Nighthawks. Mikayla Rapuano finished first in the 200 freestyle (2:10.2), while Alogna earned first place in the 100 backstroke (1:11.16).

Daniella Rapuano posted another first-place performance in the diving (189.05) to help North Haven win the meet. The 400 freestyle relay of Mikayla Rapuano, Garofalo, Karavas, and Scalmani also finished in first place (4:06.22) for the Nighthawks.

North Haven is hosting Jonathan Law for its last meet of the regular season on Friday, Oct. 21. The meet gets underway at 4 p.m. at Walter Gawrych Community Pool.

Girls’ Volleyball

The North Haven girls’ volleyball team scored victories in both of last week’s matchups and is now sporting an overall record of 10-4 this year. The Nighthawks notched a shutout against Career and then swept Hamden to reach double-digit victories for the season.

North Haven kicked off last week’s action by earning a 3-0 home win over Career on Oct. 11. The Nighthawks swept the Panthers by the final tally of 25-20, 25-9, 25-14 in the match.

Senior Sarah Herrera posted 21 assists to go with 6 digs and 2 aces for North Haven in its win versus Career. Junior Avery Berney finished the match with 8 kills, 8 digs, and 4 aces. Sophomore Alex Anquillare dealt out 10 aces to help North Haven get the sweep.

Then on Oct. 14, the Nighthawks hosted Hamden and blanked the Green Dragons by a 3-0 score at Fred Kelly Gymnasium. North Haven won the match by the final tally of 25-22, 25-16, 25-16.

Herrera had 20 assists with 9 digs, 3 kills, and 2 aces in the win. Senior Kayla Balisiciano recorded 10 kills to go with 6 digs on the night. Fellow senior Sophie Vauiso added 6 kills for the Nighthawks.

North Haven is wrapping up the regular season with three road matches this week. The Nighthawks are playing at Jonathan Law on Thursday, Oct. 20 at 6 p.m. and will then face Amity on the road at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 24. North Haven will then play a road match versus Bristol Central in its regular-season finale on Wednesday, Oct. 26 at 6:30 p.m.

Boys’ Cross Country

The North Haven boys’ cross country team picked up a couple of victories when it recently participated in a quad-meet at Carrigan Intermediate School in West Haven on Oct. 11. The Nighthawks posted a team score of 55 points to earn wins over Sheehan (60) and Hillhouse (74) to go with a loss against Notre Dame-West Haven (36) at the meet.

Junior Nico Boyle finished in first place overall by running a time of 17:18.0 for North Haven at the quad-meet. Senior Tyler Wurm ran a time of 18:39.8 to take sixth place in the race for the Nighthawks.

Next up for North Haven is the SCC Championship meet that’s taking place this week.

Girls’ Cross Country

The North Haven girls’ cross country team competed in a meet at Carrigan Middle School in West Haven last week. North Haven scored 63 points and took losses to Sacred Heart Academy (15) and Hillhouse (57) when the meet was hosted on Oct. 11.

Senior Payton Orosco finished in 10th place on behalf of the Nighthawks at last week’s meet. Orosco crossed the finish line with a time of 24:15.7 on her way to taking 10th place overall.

North Haven will next be competing in the SCC Championship that is taking place this week.

Girls’ Soccer

The North Haven girls’ soccer squad hosted Foran for its lone matchup of the week last week. The Nighthawks were edged out by the Lions by a 1-0 final in the game at North Haven Middle School on Oct. 12, evening their record at 6-6 on the season.

North Haven is hosting Career-Hillhouse for its Senior Night contest on Oct. 22. The Nighthawks will then finish the regular season with a home game against Hand on Monday, Oct. 24 at 4 p.m.

Boys’ Soccer

The North Haven boys’ soccer team lost a pair of contests last week to move to 1-11 on the year. North Haven took defeats versus Cheshire and Wilbur Cross in recent action.

On Oct. 11, the Nighthawks hosted Cheshire and took a 10-2 loss to the Rams. Three days later, North Haven hit the road to take on Wilbur Cross and lost by a 7-1 score in the matchup at Rice Field.

North Haven has two games remaining on its regular-season schedule this year. The Nighthawks are hosting Coginchaug for Senior Night on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m., after which they will play at Hamden for their final on Monday, Oct. 24 at 6 p.m.

Field Hockey

The North Haven field hockey team took two recent defeats to put its record at 4-8 on the season. The Nighthawks took losses against Cheshire and Guilford in last week’s matchups.

In its first game of the week, North Haven took a 6-1 home loss to Cheshire on Oct. 11. Two days later, the Nighthawks hosted Guilford and lost to the Grizzlies by a 6-0 score at North Haven Middle School.

North Haven is on the road to face Mercy on Friday, Oct. 21 at 4 p.m. The Nighthawks will then host Hand for their regular-season final on Monday, Oct. 24 at 7:15 p.m.
