Tigers Collect Plenty of Victories During Action-Packed Week

Field Hockey

The Hand field hockey team is standing with a record of 7-3-1 on the season after claiming victory in both of last week’s games. The Tigers earned a win versus Lauralton Hall and then notched a victory against Lyman Hall to make for a great week on the field.

Hand kicked off the week by netting a 5-1 home win over Lauralton Hall on Oct. 4. Senior Jordan Kells scored 3 goals for a hat trick and also had 1 assist to lead the Tigers to the victory. Junior goalie Faith Minickene made 11 saves in net for Hand.

Kells scored the first goal of the game on an assist from senior Anna Flanagan to give Hand a 1-0 lead. Senior Erin Funk then scored from Flanagan and junior Becca Snyder to put the Tigers up 2-0 after one. Kells netted an unassisted goal during the second quarter, giving Hand a 3-0 advantage at halftime.

Kells scored her third goal of the night on an assist from sophomore Addison Kosiewicz to increase Hand’s lead to 4-0 in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, sophomore Bridget Waters scored from Kells to finish off the 5-1 victory for the Tigers.

On Oct. 7, Hand traveled to Wallingford to face Lyman Hall and recorded a 9-0 victory in the contest. Funk scored 4 goals to go with 1 assist to lead Hand to the win. Junior Kelly Kilbourn had a goal and assist for the Tigers, who also received goals from senior Olivia Ameika, senior Shawn Staak, senior Paris Cartelli, sophomore Lucy White, and Kosiewicz.

Minickene and freshman Braelyn Frey split time in goal for the Tigers. Head Coach Sue Leckey said that Hand was bolstered by strong defensive play from Staak, Ameika, senior Kennedy Courtney, junior Mary Baker, sophomore Nora Hughes, and sophomore Morgan Mastrobattisto in the shutout victory.

The Tigers are hosting Cheshire on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 5:30 p.m. Hand will then be back home to take on Cheshire on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m.

Girls’ Soccer

The Hand girls’ soccer team netted a pair of shutout victories last week to boost its overall record to 8-1-1 for the season. The Tigers posted shutouts over Guilford and East Haven last week and have now won seven games in a row.

Hand kicked off last week by claiming a 1-0 road win against Guilford on Oct. 3. Junior Lily McFadden scored the lone goal of the game of an assist from freshman Keely Parri in the 37th minute of the contest. Junior Lily Paine made 4 saves to get the shutout in net for the Tigers.

Four days later, the Tigers played a road game in East Haven and blanked the Yellowjackets by the final tally of 3-0. McFadden scored 2 goals for Hand in the victory with one coming on an assist by Parri and the other on a helper from senior Lily Fried. Sophomore Piper Lea scored the Tigers’ other goal courtesy of an assist from freshman Alice Agovino. Paine stopped 3 shots in goal to pick up another shutout.

Hand is playing a home game versus West Haven on Thursday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. After that, the Tigers are on the road to face Sacred Heart Academy at 3:45 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 17, after which they will host Lyman Hall at the Surf Club on Wednesday, Oct. 19 at 5:30 p.m.

Boys’ Soccer

The Hand boys’ soccer team took two narrow defeats last week to move to 4-5-1 on the season. The Tigers lost both Guilford and Xavier by identical 1-0 scores in recent action.

On Oct. 3, Hand played a road game versus Guilford and dropped a 1-0 decision to the Grizzlies. Then on Oct. 7, the Tigers hosted Xavier and took a 1-0 loss the Falcons at the Surf Club. Senior goalie Court Lucas made 10 saves in net for Hand.

Hand is hosting Career-Hillhouse for a game on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 1 p.m. The Tigers will be back at the Surf Club to face Wilbur Cross at 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 17.

Girls’ Volleyball

The Hand girls’ volleyball squad saw a solid week on the court that saw the Tigers claim victory in both of their matches. The Tigers defeated both Jonathan Law and Sheehan last week to improve their record to 3-9 on the season.

Hand began last week by notching a 3-1 home victory versus Jonathan Law on Oct. 4. Two days later, the Tigers traveled to Wallingford to face Sheehan and defeated the Titans by the final score of 3-1.

Hand is playing a home match against Mercy at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 13. The Tigers will then hit the road to take on Shelton on Monday, Oct. 17 at 6 p.m.

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

The Hand girls’ swimming and diving team competed against North Haven and Jonathan Law in a pair of road meets last week. The Tigers claimed victories over both opponents to improve their overall record to 6-0-1 this year.

On Oct. 4, Hand claimed a 99-83 road win over North Haven at Walter Gawrych Community Pool. Sophomore Lillian Miller finished first in the 200 freestyle by swimming a time of 2:09.16 for Hand in the victory. Sophomore Samy Chemacki won the 100 freestyle (58.84), sophomore Seorin Kim finished first in the 100 backstroke (1:06.68), and fellow sophomore Aniella Lesick took first place in the 100 breaststroke (1:23.64) to help the Tigers defeat the Nighthawks.

Three days later, the Tigers defeated Jonathan Law by the final score of 97-83 in a matchup at Foran High School.

Football

The Hand football team has on the bye week last week. The Tigers will be back on the field to host Notre Dame-West Haven for an SCC Tier 1 game at Surf Club on Friday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. Hand comes into the game with an overall record of 1-3 and a mark of 0-2 in the division. Notre Dame has an overall record of 3-1 to go with a divisional record of 2-0.
