The Haddam-Killingworth football team hit the road to take on Windsor Locks-Suffield-East Granby (WL-S-EG) for a Saturday afternoon showdown on Oct. 8. The Cougars claimed a 28-12 victory in the contest at Windsor Locks High School to boost their overall record to 2-2 on the season.

Senior Orion Inkel rushed for 144 yards and 1 touchdown on 23 carries and also caught 2 touchdown passes to lead H-K to its win over the Windsor Locks co-op team. Senior quarterback Alex Phipps was 15-of-21 passing for 126 yards and 3 touchdowns for the Cougars. Senior Tate Callender caught a touchdown pass and also assisted fellow senior Jayden Fulton in tackling a Raiders’ player in the end zone for a safety.

The Cougars took a 2-0 lead when Callender and Fulton joined forces to record the safety in the opening quarter. Inkel then scored on a 2-yard touchdown run to make it 8-0. Later in the period, Phipps connected with Callender for a 14-yard TD pass and 14-0 advantage. Senior Zenon Kolcio kicked the extra point to make the score 15-0 in favor of H-K after one.

In the second quarter, Phipps found Inkel on a 6-yard touchdown strike to increase H-K’s lead. The Cougars took a 21-0 advantage into the halftime break.

WL-S-EG got on the board with a 3-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. H-K stopped the Raiders on the 2-point conversion run and brought a 21-6 lead into the fourth.

The Cougars put the game away when Phipps tossed a 10-yard touchdown pass to Inkel in the fourth quarter. Kolcio hit the extra point to make it 28-6. W-S-EG scored the final points of the game on a 57-yard touchdown pass to put the final score at 28-12.

H-K will be on the bye week for this week. The Cougars’ next game is a Pequot Conference Sassacus Division matchup at North Branford (2-3, 1-2) on Friday, Oct. 21 at 6:30 p.m.

The Haddam-Killingworth girls’ swimming and diving team hit the road to face Ledyard for a matchup last week. H-K claimed an 88-49 win against the Colonels in an outdoor meet at the Vitale Aquatic & Tennis Center to improve their record to 4-0 for the season.

Sophomore Liv Macaluso took first place in the 100-yard backstroke with a state-qualifying time of 1:10.51 for H-K. Macaluso also finished first in the 200 individual medley at the meet. Earlier in the season, Macaluso qualified for states in both the 200 IM and the 100 butterfly.

Senior captain Erin Marica finished first in the 500 freestyle by swimming a state-qualifying time of 6:05.54 in last week’s meet. Marica also took first place in the 100 breaststroke for the Cougars in their win versus Ledyard.

Senior captain Jo Houska claimed first place in the 200 freestyle and the 100 butterfly for H-K. Junior Peyton Tyler earned top honors in the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle.

H-K also swept all three relays at the meet. The Cougars received victories from their 200 freestyle relay of Houska, Tyler, junior Emma Sajus, and junior Layla Hayward; their 200 medley relay of Macaluso, Marica, Sajus, and Hayward; and their 400 freestyle relay featuring Houska, Hayward, Macaluso, and Marica.

Head Coach Alison Karam noted that several other swimmers scored points to help H-K defeat Ledyard. Those athletes includes senior captain Kristen Thebuea, senior Aleysha Brawley, sophomore Olivia Campo, sophomore Sofia Campo, sophomore VV Pypa, and freshman Maggie Miller.

H-K has a road meet versus Suffield at Windsor Locks High School coming up on Friday, Oct. 14 at 4 p.m. The Cougars will then be back on the road to face Rocky Hill at 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 18.

The H-K girls’ volleyball team hosted Cromwell for a contest on Oct. 7. The Cougars blanked the Panthers by the final score of 3-0 to improve their record to 7-3 this season.

The Cougars are hosting North Branford on Friday, Oct. 14 at 5:30 p.m. H-K will then hit the road to play Valley Regional on Monday, Oct. 17 at 6 p.m. and East Hampton on Wednesday, Oct. 19 at 6 p.m.

The Haddam-Killingworth field hockey team took two defeats last week and is now 3-6-1 on the season. The Cougars took a loss to Canton and then lost a contest against Morgan in their two recent games.

H-K lost to Canton by a 5-0 score in a non-conference road game on Oct. 3. Four days later, the Cougars traveled to Clinton to face Morgan and took a 4-1 loss to the Huskies at the Indian River Complex.

H-K is playing a home game versus Old Saybrook on Friday, Oct. 14 at 3:45 p.m. The Cougars will then face Mercy on the road on Monday, Oct. 17 at 3:45 p.m., followed by a home contest against North Branford at 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 19.

The Haddam-Killingworth girls’ soccer team lost a pair of contests last week to move to 5-4-1 this season. The Cougars dropped decisions against Canton and Morgan in their recent games.

On Oct. 3, H-K took a 1-0 road loss to Canton in a non-conference contest. Three days later, the Cougars played a home game versus Morgan and lost to the Huskies by a 2-0 score.

H-K is on the road to face the North Branford/Hale-Ray co-op squad at Hale-Ray High School on Friday, Oct. 15 at 6 p.m. The Cougars will then play a road game against East Hampton on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 6 p.m.

The Haddam-Killingworth played a road game versus non-conference opponent Manchester in its lone game of the week last week. The Cougars took a 2-0 defeat to Manchester on Oct. 3 and put their overall record at 4-2-1 for the year.

H-K is hosting North Branford for a game at 3:45 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 13. The Cougars will then face Morgan on the road on Friday, Oct. 14 at 6:30 p.m., followed by a home game with East Hampton on Monday, Oct. 17 at 3:45 p.m.
