Old Saybrook Boys’ Soccer Raises Record to 9-0; Field Hockey Edges Out Westbrook-Old Lyme

Boys’ Soccer

The Old Saybrook boys’ soccer team improved to 9-0 on the season after winning all three of its games last week. The Rams notched victories versus Morgan, Cromwell, Norwich Free Academy to stay undefeated for the 2022 campaign.

Old Saybrook started off last week by earning a 2-1 road win against Morgan at the Indian River Complex in Clinton on Oct. 4. With the Rams trailing 1-0, junior Kevin DeCapua scored the equalizing goal in the 29th minute of the contest for Old Saybrook. Then in the 45th minute, senior Cam D’Angelo gave Old Saybrook a 2-1 lead when he scored a goal of an assist from junior Brayden Cody.

The Rams kept the Huskies off the board for the rest of the game and walked off the field with the one-goal victory. Junior London Sweeney made 7 saves in net for Old Saybrook.

Two days later, the Rams hosted Cromwell and Old Saybrook High School and won the contest by a 5-0 score. Then on Oct. 8, Old Saybrook played a home game versus non-conference opponent Norwich Free Academy and triumphed by a 3-2 final in the contest.

Old Saybrook is facing East Hampton on the road for a matchup at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 13. The Rams will then host Canton on Friday, Oct. 14 at 6 p.m., followed by a road game against Coginchaug at 3:45 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 17.

Girls’ Soccer

The Old Saybrook girls’ soccer team hit the road to play a trio of away games in last week’s action. The Rams finished the week with a tie and two losses after taking taking defeats to St. Bernard and Cromwell and also earning a draw versus Montville. Old Saybrook is now 2-4-4 on the year.

Old Saybrook began the week by taking a 2-0 defeat against St. Bernard in a road game on Oct. 3. The following day, the Rams played Montville to a 0-0 tie in another road game. Then on Oct. 7, Old Saybrook was back on the road to take on Cromwell and took a 5-0 loss to the Panthers in the contest.

The Rams are playing a home game against East Hampton on Friday, Oct. 14 at 3:30 p.m. Old Saybrook will go on to host Coginchaug for another Shoreline Conference contest at 5:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 18.

Field Hockey

The Old Saybrook field hockey team played three recent games and claimed victory in one of those contests to put its overall record at 7-4-1 for the season. The Rams netted a victory over Westbrook-Old Lyme before losing to North Branford and Suffield in their games last week.

On Oct. 3, Old Saybrook hosted the Westbrook-Old Lyme co-op squad and won the contest by the final score of 3-2. Sophomore Ayla D’Anna scored 2 goals for the Rams, while senior Maggie Ashe had 1 goal in the victory. Junior Amelia Sigersmith and freshman Kendall Dobratz each had 1 assist.

Senior Brianna Berdiales played goal in the first half for Old Saybrook and made 3 saves. Fellow senior goalie Kate Molesky stepped into the net for the second half and had 4 saves.

Then Oct. 6, the Rams hit the road to face off against North Branford and took a 5-1 loss versus the Thunderbirds. D’Anna scored Old Saybrook’s lone goal of the game on an assist from Sigersmith. Berdiales made 8 saves in the first half, and Molesky made 6 saves in the second half.

The very next day, Old Saybrook played a non-conference road game versus Suffield and dropped a 2-1 decision in the contest. Sigersmith scored the goal for the Rams on an assist by Dobratz. Berdiales had 8 saves in the first half, while Molesky stopped 4 shots in goal during the latter stanza.

Old Saybrook is facing Haddam-Killingworth on the road on Friday, Oct. 14 at 3:45 p.m. The Rams will go on to host Fitch at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15.

Football

The Old Saybrook-Westbrook (OS-W) football team hit the road to take on the CREC Co-op team for a Saturday morning matchup on Oct. 8. OS-W took a 20-14 defeat against CREC at the Academy of Computer Science and Engineering to move to 0-5 on the season.

OS-W is on the bye week for this week. The Rams are hosting Cromwell-Portland (5-0, 4-0) for a Pequot Conference Sassacus Division contest at Old Saybrook High School on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 6 p.m.
