The Branford boys’ soccer team played two games last week and came away with a pair of victories to boost its overall record to 6-4 for the season. The Hornets claimed a win versus East Haven and then defeated Lyman Hall in last week’s matches.

On Oct. 3, Branford played a road game against East Haven and defeated the Yellowjackets by the final score of 4-1. Then on Oct. 7, the Hornets hosted Lyman Hall and posted a 4-0 shutout in the matchup.

Sophomore Ernad Spreco had a big game by scoring 3 goals to go with 1 assist for Branford in its win over Lyman Hall. Spreco scored from sophomore Sean Howard to give the Hornets a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute of the game. Four minutes later, Spreco had the assist on a goal by sophomore Mostafa Kafal to make the score 2-0.

Spreco went on to score an unassisted goal in the 34th minute to put Branford up 2-0 at halftime. Spreco completed his hat trick by netting his third goal of the night in the 46th minute to finish off a 4-0 victory for the Hornets.

The Branford girls’ soccer team claimed victory in its two games last week and now has a record of 8-2 on the year. The Hornets notched a convincing win against East Haven before shutting out Foran in recent action and nave now won five games in a row.

Branford began last week by earning a 7-1 victory versus East Haven in the team’s Pink Game on Oct. 3. The Hornets held a 4-1 halftime advantage and then scored all 3 goals in the second half to pull away for the win.

Senior Ava Ferrie scored 3 goals to go with 2 assists for Branford in the victory. Junior Tess Ferrie had 1 goal and 1 assist to help the Hornets prevail.

Junior Maddie Resendes scored the first goal of the game for the Hornets and wound up finishing the day with 2 goals and 1 assist. Junior Lucy Moran added a goal for Branford in the win. Senior goalie Molly Pombo made 4 saves in net.

Then on Oct. 8, the Hornets traveled to Milford to face Foran and blanked the Lions by a 2-0 final.

Branford is hosting Shelton for a contest on Friday, Oct. 14 at 3:45 p.m. After that, the Hornets will be on the road to face Cheshire on Monday, Oct. 17 at 6 p.m., followed by a road game against Hamden at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 19.

The Branford girls’ volleyball team improved to 5-6 on the season after winning two of its three matches last week. The Hornets netted victories over East Haven and Hillhouse to go with a loss against Amity in last week’s action.

Branford kicked off last week by posting a 3-0 home win versus East Haven on Oct. 3. Branford swept the match by the final tally of 25-10, 25-18, 25-5.

Then on Oct. 6, the Hornets took a 3-1 loss to Amity in another home match. Branford closed out the week by posting a 3-0 shutout at Hillhouse on Oct. 7.

Branford is hosting Foran for a matchup on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 11 a.m. Branford will then face North Haven on the road at 6 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 17.

The Branford field hockey team played three games last week and came away from the slate with three victories to boost its overall record to 7-2-1 this season. The Hornets earned wins versus North Haven, North Haven, and Newtown for make for a perfect week on the field.

On Oct. 4, Branford hosted North Haven and blanked the Nighthawks by the final score of 2-0. Senior Scout Engstrom scored both of the Hornets’ goals in the victory. Senior Lauren Kendrick and freshman Tate Jones each had 1 assist for Branford. Head Coach Pete Frye noted that the Hornets were bolstered by standout performances from senior Lauren McCarthy, senior Aryana Wilson, junior Ellie Wieland, and junior Reanna Sachs in the game.

Then on Oct. 7, the Hornets hit the road to square off against Shelton and claimed a 7-0 victory against the Gales. Freshman Aliza Giordano scored 3 goals for Branford in the win. Engstrom had 2 goals and 1 assist, while Kendrick scored 1 goal to go with 2 assists. Junior Mia d’Amuri scored the other goal for the Hornets.

Senior Gianna Bozzi and junior Iva Sekerovic each had 1 assist in the victory. Branford also received some solid play from Jones, senior Gianna Bonanno, senior Gabby Morrotti, junior Rachel Esposito, and sophomore Randee Chobian.

Branford finished out the week by earning a 2-1 win versus Newtown in a non-conference home game on Oct. 8. The Hornets trailed Newtown 1-0 going into the fourth quarter, but then rallied for a pair of goals to come away with the one-score victory.

Kendrick netted both of Branford’s goals in the final period. Kendrick scored the equalizer with 13 minutes left in the game and then gave the Hornets a 2-1 advantage scoring the go-ahead goal with 7:26 remaining.

Giordano, d’Amuri, Bozzi, and McCarthy all had 1 assist for Branford in the win. Junior Julia Bozzi made 1 save in net. Engstrom, Wieland, and Sachs also turned in excellent performances to help the Hornets come out on top.

Branford has a road game against Lyman Hall at 3:45 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 13. The Hornets will then host North Branford on Monday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m.

The Branford boys’ cross country team finished in second place among seven squads when the Hornets competed at the Lauralton Classic hosted at Eisenhower Park in Milford on Oct. 3. The Hornets scored 67 points as a team on their way to claiming runner-up honors at the meet.

Junior Dom Zdunek finished in fifth place by clocking in with a time of 18:10 for the Hornets at the Lauralton Classic. Senior Colin Donahoe took sixth place finishing the race with a time of 18:19. Senior Massimo Corrick finished in 10th place at 18:35 for Branford.

Junior Sam Coppola finished in 19th place (18:57) at the meet. Junior Vincent Hesselink finished in 27th place, while fellow junior Anton Hesselink came in 32nd place (20:22) on behalf of the Hornets.

Branford will be participating in the SCC Championships this week. The conference meet will take place at East Shore Athletic Complex in New Haven on Wednesday, Oct. 19 at 1 p.m.

The Branford girls’ cross country hit the trails to participate in the Lauralton Hall Classic last week. Branford scored 74 points to finish in third place out seven clubs that competed in the meet at Eisenhower Park on Oct. 3.

Junior Tanner Marrandino ran a time of 21:23 to take third place for Branford at the Lauralton Classic. Senior Hannah Jackson finished in 11th place by hitting the finish line in 22:56.

Sophomore Peyton Gaudreau came in 17th place (24:10) for the Hornets at the meet. Fellow sophomore Ella Stone finished in 19th place (24:38). Senior Marina Smiarowski finished in 24th place (25:51), and senior Lila Wasiolek crossed the finish line in 29th place (26:57) for Branford.

Next up for the Hornets is the SCC Championship that is taking place at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 19. The meet will be held at East Shore Athletic Complex in New Haven.

The Branford girls’ swimming and diving team took two defeats in its recent meets. The Hornets lost contests against Sheehan and Foran in last week’s contests.

On Oct. 3, Branford hosted Sheehan and lost to the Titans by the score of 85-64 at the Walsh Intermediate pool. Three days later, the Hornets faced Foran on the road and took an 85-70 loss against the Lions.

Branford has a home meet versus West Haven on Thursday, Oct. 13 at 4 p.m. The Hornets will then compete against Shelton at the Shelton Community Center Pool on Monday, Oct. 17 at 3:30 p.m.

The Branford football team was on the bye week for last week. The Hornets will be back in action to host Foran for an SCC Tier 3 game on Friday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. Branford comes into the game with an overall record of 2-2 and a mark of 0-2 in the division. Foran is 4-0 overall and 2-0 in its SCC Tier 3 games.
