Cougars’ Cross Country Records Big Achievements on the Course; Girls’ Soccer Posts a Pair of Victories

Boys’ Cross Country

The Haddam-Killingworth boys’ cross country team had a big week that saw the Cougars post a sweep at the Shoreline Conference Large Schools Meet and then finish in first place at the New York Night Time Showcase competition.

H-K opened its dual-meet season by competing against four opponents in the Shoreline Conference Large Schools Meet at Totoket Park in North Branford on Sept. 28. The Cougars swept the meet by earning 15-50 victory over Morgan, a 15-50 win against North Branford, a 15-49 win versus Valley Regional, and a 20-42 victory against Cromwell.

The H-K boys ran as a pack over the 3.1-mile course with freshman Daniel McCourt leading the way in third place behind a time of 19:10. Crossing the finish line with the same time was McCourt were sophomore Colton Merola in fourth, sophomore Jack Cozean in fifth, junior Luke Hedges in sixth, and senior captain Alex Lara in seventh for the Cougars.

Then on Oct. 1, H-K traveled to Montgomery, New York to compete at the inaugural New York Night Time Showcase. The Cougars finished in first place by scoring 45 points to outdistance several teams from New York and one club from Maryland.

Lara finished fifth for the 2.5-mile course by running a time of 13:38 for H-K. Cozean finished in sixth place (13:57), Hedges placed seventh (14:12), McCourt claimed 12th place (14:29), and Merola came in 15th place (14:39) at the meet.

H-K also earned a first-place finish in the JV race. Senior Peter Lavelle finished in first place with a time of 15:02, and freshman Alex Frederickson finished second at 15:06.

Girls’ Cross Country

The Haddam-Killingworth girls’ cross country squad is off to a perfect start to its dual-meet season after defeating all four of its opponents at last week’s Shoreline Conference Large Schools Meet. The Cougars went on to compete in the New York Night Time Showcase and came in fourth place as a squad.

H-K notched 15-50 wins against Morgan, Cromwell, Valley Regional, and North Branford when it ran in the Shoreline Conference Large Schools Meet. The event was hosted at Totoket Park in North Branford on Sept. 28.

Sophomore Margaret Robinson finished in third place by completing the 5,000-meter course with a time of 23:45 for the Cougars. H-K’s pack of athletes featuring junior Sydney Adelberg, senior Chloe Lacoss, senior Isabel Berardino, senior Kira O’Brien, sophomore Keira Sehl-Albert, freshman Grace Mitchell, and freshman Delaney Aronson also finished with the same time as Robinson on their way to placing 4th through 10th, respectively, on behalf of Head Coach Matt Diglio’s team.

The Cougars then finished in fourth place with 89 points scored at the New York Night Time Showcase in Montgomery, New York. Mitchell took second place in the race by crossing the finish line with a time of 15:43 for H-K. Mitchell was followed across the line by Berardino (13th, 16:31), Adelberg (21st, 16:57), Sehl-Albert (23rd, 17:01), Lacoss (34th, 18:18), and O’Brien (18:24).

The cross country team will next be in action on Tuesday October 4th at home as they host the Floyd Parness Invitational.

Girls’ Soccer

The Haddam-Killingworth girls’ soccer team picked up a couple of recent road victories to boost its record to 5-2-1 on the campaign. The Cougars posted a one-goal win over Wilbur Cross and then notched a shutout against Westbrook in last week’s contests.

H-K began last week by earning a 3-2 win against Wilbur Cross in a non-conference game in New Haven on Sept. 29. The following day, the Cougars were back on the road to take on Shoreline Conference rival Westbrook and blanked the Knights by a 5-0 final.

Haddam-Killingworth is hosting Morgan on Thursday, Oct. 6. The game gets underway at 3:45 p.m. at H-K High School.

Boys’ Soccer

The Haddam-Killingworth boys’ soccer team hit the pitch to host Westbrook for its lone matchup of the week last week. The Cougars played the Knights to a 0-0 tie in the Shoreline Conference contest to put their overall record at 4-1-1 on the year.

The Cougars are playing a road game against Cromwell on Monday, Oct. 10 at 10 a.m. H-K will then be back on the road to face St. Paul on Wednesday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m.

Girls’ Volleyball

The Haddam-Killingworth girls’ volleyball team played two road matches last week and came away with a split of the set to put its overall record at 6-3 on the season. H-K took a loss against Hale-Ray before earning a win versus Morgan to finish off the week.

On Sept. 28, H-K played a road match with Hale-Ray and was edged out by the final score of 3-2. Two days later, the Cougars traveled to Clinton to face Morgan and claimed a 3-2 victory against the Huskies.

H-K is hosting Cromwell on Friday, Oct. 7 at 4:30 p.m. After that, the Cougars have three-straight road meets with contests against Windsor on Saturday, Oct. 8 at noon; Coginchaug on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 5:30 p.m.; and Old Lyme on Wednesday, Oct. 12 at 5:30 p.m.

Field Hockey

The Haddam-Killingworth field hockey squad took two defeats last week to move to 3-4-1 on the season. The Cougars lost contests against Newington and Valley Regional in recent action.

H-K took a 2-0 road loss against Newington in a non-conference game on Sept. 29. The next day, the Cougars hosted Shoreline Conference rival Valley Regional and lost to the Warriors by a 3-0 score.

H-K is playing a road game versus Morgan on Friday, Oct. 7 at 4 p.m. The Cougars will then face the Westbrook-Old Lyme co-op squad at Westbrook High School on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 4 p.m.

Football

The Haddam-Killingworth football team had a bye week last week. The Cougars, who have a record of 1-2 on the year, will be back on the field to face Windsor Locks-Suffield-East Granby (0-3) for a road game this week. The contest kicks off at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 8 at Windsor Locks High School.
