Valley Volleyball Sees a Winning Week with Two Victories; Boys’ Soccer Posts 6-0 Shutout Over Hale-Ray

Girls’ Volleyball

The Valley Regional girls’ volleyball team hit the court to play a trio of matches last week. The Warriors claimed victory in two of those three contests and now has a record of 5-5 on the season.

Valley kicked off its week by posting a 3-1 road win over North Branford on Sept. 28. The Warriors defeated the T-Birds by the final tally of 25-17, 25-21, 23-25, 25-18 in the contest.

Senior Audrey Board had 9 kills with 3 solo blocks to help Valley get its win against North Branford. Senior Kaia Karcich punched up 16 digs to go with 1 ace and 15 service receptions. Fellow senior Sophie Scrivo dished out 15 assists and also had 5 aces, 6 digs, and 1 blocks for the Warriors.

Two days later, Valley hosted Coginchaug and took a 3-2 defeat against the Blue Devils. Coginchaug took the contest behind set scores of 18-25, 25-23, 20-25, 26-24, 15-11.

Then on Oct. 1, the Warriors played a home match versus Ledyard and posted a 3-0 win over the Colonels at Valley Regional High School. Valley swept the matchup by the final tally of 25-23, 25-23, 25-21.

Karcich had a big match by posting 25 digs and serving up 2 aces for Valley Regional. Sophomore Regan Grow recorded 5 kills with 4 digs and 2 blocks in the contest. Junior Joanna Petrone had 18 digs for Head Coach Sofia Cullina’s team.

Valley is hosting Hale-Ray for a match on Friday, Oct. 7 at 6 p.m. and will then face Cromwell at home on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 12:30 p.m. After that, the Warriors will take the road to play Morgan at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 10.

Boys’ Soccer

The Valley Regional boys’ soccer team gained a split in its two games last week to move to 2-5 on the season. Valley took a loss against Morgan and then posted a shutout over Hale-Ray in last week’s contests.

On Sept. 28, the Warriors hosted Morgan and lost the game by an 8-0 score at Valley Regional High School. Sophomore goalkeepers Kenny Batt and Cameron Costanzo combined to make 10 saves for Valley in the game.

Two days later, Valley traveled to Moodus to face Hale-Ray and recorded a 6-0 shutout against the Noises. Senior Jake McKenna recorded a hat trick by scoring 3 goals for the Warriors in the victory. Fellow senior Michael Kollmer netted a pair of goals, while freshman Noah Dolinsky scored the other goal for Valley Regional.

Junior Deryck Llivichuzca handed out 2 assists in the win. Sophomore Tucker Norton, sophomore Birch Whitbeck, and freshman Patrick Finnegan contributed 1 assist apiece for Head Coach Mick Fearon’s team. Batt and Costanzo made 5 combined saves for the shutout in goal.

The Warriors will be on the road to take on Coginchaug on Thursday, Oct. 6 at 6 p.m. Valley will then play a home game versus Portland on Saturday, Oct. 8, after which the Warriors are hosting Old Lyme at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 11.

Girls’ Soccer

The Valley Regional girls’ soccer team played one game last week when the Warriors faced Portland on the road. The Warriors earned a tie with the Highlanders and now have a record of 2-0-4 on the year.

Valley played a road game against Shoreline Conference opponent Portland on Sept. 27. Head Coach Lloyd Warren’s club picked up a point in the standings and also stayed undefeated on the year after battling Portland to a 1-1 draw in the contest.

Portland scored the first goal of the game in the 31st minute and held a 1-0 lead at halftime. The Warriors tied it up when freshman Madelyn Riebold scored an unassisted goal 20 minutes into the second half, making the score 1-1. After neither team was able to score the go-ahead goal through the rest of regulation and overtime, Valley and Portland walked off the field with a 1-1 tie.

Valley is playing a home game versus Coginchaug on Thursday, Oct. 6 at 6 p.m. The Warriors will then be on the road to face Fitch on Saturday, Oct. 8, followed by a road game with Old Lyme at 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 11.

Football

The Valley Regional-Old Lyme football team was on the bye week last week. With their 3-0 record, Warriors will return to the gridiron to host the Coventry-Windham Tech-Bolton-Lyman (0-4) on Saturday, Oct. 8. The game is taking place at Lyme-Old Lyme High School and will kick off at 1 p.m.
