The Hand girls’ soccer team improved its record to 4-1-1 this year after scoring victories in all three of its games last week. Hand posted shutouts over West Haven and Sacred Heart Academy and then defeated Lyman Hall to finish off a solid week on the soccer pitch.

Hand began its week by earning a 2-0 road victory versus West Haven on Sept. 20. Senior Maya Howard scored the Tigers’ first goal on an assist by fellow senior Maddie Coulis. Later in the game, junior Charlie Lee netted a goal on a helper from senior Lydia Doraz to give Hand some insurance. Junior goalkeeper Lily Paine made 5 saves in net for the Tigers.

Then on Sept. 22, the Tigers played a home game against an undefeated Sacred Heart Academy team and won the contest by a 2-0 score at the Surf Club. Howard gave Hand a 1-0 lead when she scored off a free kick. Junior Lilly McFadden made it 2-0 after finding the back of the net on an assist from senior Lily Fried. Paine had 5 saves for another shutout in goal.

Hand finished up its week by netting a 3-1 win at Lyman Hall in Wallingford on Sept. 24. McFadden scored Hand’s first goal on an assist by Coulis, who later assisted Fried for a goal. Freshman Alice Agovino scored from Howard on a corner kick to give the Tigers their third goal of the game. Paine made 4 saves in goal for Hand.

Hand will be hosting North Haven for a matchup at the Surf Club on Thursday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. The Tigers will then play a road game versus Guilford at 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 3.

The Hand boys’ soccer team picked up its first win of the season when the Tigers claimed a road victory over Career-Hillhouse last week. Hand went on to earn a tie versus Fairfield Prep to put its overall record at 1-3-1 on the year.

On Sept. 20, Hand traveled to New Haven to face the Career-Hillhouse co-op squad and edged out the Panthers by a 1-0 score at Bowen Field. Then on Sept. 24, Hand squared off against Fairfield Prep and battled the Jesuits to a 1-1 draw at Fairfield University.

Hand is hosting Jonathan Law at the Surf Club on Friday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. The Tigers will then face Guilford on the road at 5 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 3.

The Hand field hockey squad claimed victory in two of its three games last week to move to 3-2 on the year. The Tigers earned wins versus Sacred Heart Academy and Glastonbury and to go with a loss to Guilford in recent action.

On Sept. 20, Hand traveled to Hamden to face Sacred Heart Academy and won the contest by a 2-1 score. Hand grabbed a 1-0 lead when junior Kelly Kilbourn scored from junior Jordan Kells and senior Anna Flanagan in the second period. The Tigers made it 2-0 on a goal by junior Katie Flanagan off an assist by senior Grace Barrett during the third period.

Sacred Heart Academy cut the deficit in half by scoring a goal in the fourth period of the game. However, Hand was able to maintain its 2-1 lead through the final minutes and walk off the field with the victory.,Junior goalie Faith Minickene had 5 saves to get the win in goal.

Then on Sept. 23, the Tigers hosted Glastonbury and notched a 1-0 victory in a non-conference game at Daniel Hand High School. Barrett scored the lone goal of the day in the second quarter to lead Hand to the win. Minickene made 15 saves in net for the Tigers.

The following day, Hand played a road game against Guilford and took a 3-0 defeat against the Grizzlies.

Hand is hosting Hamden for a game on Friday, Sept. 30 at 4 p.m. The Tigers will then be on the road to take on Hall on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 12:30 p.m. After that, Hand returns home for a matchup against Lauralton Hall at Daniel Hand High School on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m.

The Hand boys’ cross country team swept a quad-meet at the Surf Club on Sept. 20. The Tigers finished with a team score of 29 points to earn wins versus Cheshire, Hamden, and Career, edging out Cheshire (34) for the top spot at the meet. Senior Nick Montana finished in first place for the race by running a time of 16:35 on behalf of the Tigers.

Hand will hit the course to take part in the SCC Divisional Championship next week. The competition takes place at the Guilford Fairgrounds at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 29.

The Hand girls’ cross country squad competed against three teams in a home meet last week. The Tigers finished the competition with a score of 54 to take losses against Cheshire and Hamden at the meet. Freshman Annecy Vlieks claimed first place overall for race by crossing the finish line with a mark of 18:47 for Hand.

Hand will be competing in the SCC Divisional Championship meet at the Guilford Fairgrounds on Thursday, Sept. 29 at 4 p.m.

The Hand girls’ volleyball team took two road losses last week and is now 1-5 on the season. The Tigers lost contests against Lauralton Hall and Mercy in their last two matches.

The Tigers traveled to Milford to face Lauralton Hall on Sept. 19 and took a 3-1 defeat to the Crusaders. Lauralton Hall won the contest with set scores of 24-26, 25-22, 25-14, and 25-11.

Then on Sept. 23, Hand made the trek to Middletown for a showdown versus Mercy. Hand took a 3-0 defeat in the battle of the Tigers at Mercy High School.

Hand has a home game against Shelton at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 29. The Tigers will then be on the road to play Guilford on Friday, Sept. 30 at 5:15 p.m. Following those contests, Hand is playing a road match versus Amity on Monday, Oct. 3 at 6:30 p.m. and then has a home match with Jonathan Law at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 4.

The Hand football team hosted Newtown for a non-conference matchup at the Surf Club on Sept. 23. The Tigers took a 28-0 loss to the Nighthawks to put their overall record at 1-2 on the season.

Following a scoreless first half, Newtown returned the opening kickoff of the second half for a 90-yard touchdown and then scored another TD later in the frame to take a 14-0 lead into the fourth. The Nighthawks added a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter to win the contest by a 28-0 score.

Hand’s next game is a road tilt versus fellow SCC Tier 1 opponent Cheshire (3-0, 1-0) on Friday, Sept. 30. The ball kicks off at 7 p.m. at Cheshire High School.
