White Sox Clinging to Top Spot in Deep River Horseshoe League

The White Sox maintained their hold on first place in the Deep River Horseshoe League by earning a win versus the Marlins in a marquee matchup during Week 14 play. The White Sox defeated the Marlins by the score of 5-1 on July 28 to improve their record to 51.5-32.5 and remain in first place by a half-game over the second-place Giants, who are 51-33.

Westbrook resident Dennis Allen, a B Division player, finished with a series of 100 to hit the century mark for the seventh-straight week and help the White Sox come away with the victory. Clinton resident Mark Goodale posted a 139 series for the third-best score in the A Division on the week for the Marlins, who slipped down to sixth place with the loss.

In other action, the Giants pulled off a surprising 6-0 sweep of the Marlins to inch their way closer to first place. Haddam resident Mike Zanelli, Sr., of the Giants was the league’s high scorer on the night by recording a series of 141 to top the A Division.

The Orioles held on to third place in the standings following a 3-3 tie with the Rangers. Deep River resident Ed Turner turned in his best game (39 points and 10 ringers) and series (115 points and 25 ringers) of the season to help the Orioles gain the split. Clinton resident Mike Beckwith of the Rangers was third-leading scorer for the C Division with a score of 74 on the night.

The Tigers moved into fourth place with a 5-1 triumph against the Braves. Sheryl Serviss of Deep River put together a 137-point, 37-ringer series to lift the Tigers to the win. Killingworth resident Todd Nuhn finished with a 112 series for the second-best score in the B Division for Week 14.

In a key matchup in the playoff chase, the Red Sox notched a 4-2 victory over the Padres to put both teams in a tie for eighth place in the standings. Bill Beckwith of Old Lyme led the Red Sox to the win by tossing a series of 141, which was the second-best mark in the A Division on the week.

In another notable contest, the Reds came away with a 3-3 split against the Cardinals to stay in fifth place. Chester resident Jeremy Davis of the Reds led all B Division players with a 117 series in the match.

Zanelli, Sr. (141), Bill Beckwith (140), and Goodale (139) were bunched up at the top of the pack in the A Division during Week 14. In the B Division, Davis (117) and Nuhn (112) were followed by Ted Dubay of Colchester (104) for the top three spots. Paul Stevens of Higganum finished with a 78 to lead the C Division and was followed by Guilford resident Bill Black (75) and Mike Beckwith (74).

Right now, the top teams in the Deep River Horseshoe League standings are the White Sox (51-32.5), Giants (51-33), Orioles (48.5-35.5), Tigers (46.5-37.5), Cardinals (45-39), Marlins (44.5-39.5), Pirates (43.5-40.5), Padres (43-41), and Red Sox (43-41). The rest of the standings are as follows: Royals (42-42), Rangers (41-43), Reds (41-43), Dodgers (40-44), Cubs (40-44), Yankees (36.5-47.5), Braves (35-49), Mets (34-50), and Angels (29-55).
