Rams’ Basketball Teams Take a Few Defeats
Boys’ Basketball
The Old Saybrook boys’ basketball team played three games last week and lost each of the contests on its slate. The losses drop the Rams’ record to 0-10 on the season.
On Jan. 20, the Rams hosted Haddam-Killingworth and took a 60-56 home defeat to the Cougars. H-K got off to a strong start by outscoring Old Saybrook 17-9 in the first quarter. The Rams saw H-K’s lead increase by a point with a 16-15 second quarter for a 33-24 halftime score. The Cougars increased their lead again in the third for a 48-37 advantage heading into the fourth frame. Old Saybrook did a good job catching up with a 19-12 final frame, but just couldn’t get over the hump and took the loss.
Davis Brown scored 14 points, and Mike Almada added 11. Also, Ryan Stratton supplied nine points for the Rams.
On Jan. 24, the Rams headed to Deep River to take on Valley Regional and Old Saybrook took a tough 82-38 road defeat against the Warriors. While the Valley 18-13 lead was manageable after the first quarter, the Warriors offense kicked into another gear with a 25-12 second quarter. Valley led 43-25 at halftime, and the lead only grew in the second half.
Almada scored the bulk of the Rams’ points with 10 and Brown added nine points. Tucker Gometz supplied eight points.
The next day, Old Saybrook was on the road again to face Ledyard, and the Rams took a 77-60 defeat there.
Girls’ Basketball
The Rams had three games slated for the schedule last week and lost all three of them. On Jan. 20, Old Saybrook were at Haddam-Killingworth and took a 55-20 loss against the Cougars. On Jan. 24, the Rams hosted Valley Regional and dropped a 45-37 game against the Warriors. The next day, the Rams were back on the road where they took a 51-26 defeat against Ledyard.
