Senior running back Dalton Modehn etched his name into the Haddam-Killingworth record books by putting forth a historic performance when the Cougars’ football squad earned a 55-43 home win over Coventry-Windham-Tech-Bolton-Lyman Memorial last week. On Nov. 21, Modehn set school records for both touchdowns and rushing yards in a game by running for 404 yards and scoring seven TDs to lead H-K to its second win of the year.
Modehn carried the ball 46 times on his way to rushing for 404 yards. He scored six of his touchdowns on the ground and also caught a pass for a score. Modehn totaled 44 points on the night to set another school record for the Cougars, who improved to 2-7 heading into their season finale against Valley Regional-Old Lyme.
Modehn, who missed several games earlier in the year due to an ankle injury, got his night started by scoring on a 19-yard touchdown run early in the game. Kevin Cavrell kicked the extra point for a 7-0 lead.
Following a score by the visitors, Modehn scored a touchdown from four yards out and then took in the 2-point conversion. Modehn later scored on a 1-yard TD run, after which Alex Riccitelli ran in the 2-point try to give H-K a 23-8 lead after one.
In the second quarter, Riccitelli ran for a 16-yard touchdown, followed by a 15-yard score from Modehn as the Cougars’ offense kept rolling. Cavrell hit the extra point after both TDs to increase the lead at halftime. Riccitelli had 16 carries for 92 yards on the night.
Modehn scored on a 2-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Riccitelli fired an 11-yard scoring strike to Modehn early in the fourth. Modehn finished off his historic performance by running for a 76-yard touchdown to put a bow on the Cougars’ 55-43 victory.
H-K finished its season by taking on Pequot Conference Sassacus Division rival Valley Regional-Old Lyme in the annual battle for the Principal’s Cup this week. The game took place on Nov. 26 (after press time) at Haddam-Killingworth High School.
