Rams’ Football Loses Close Contest; Boys’ Soccer Qualifies for Class S Tourney

The Old Saybrook-Westbrook (OS-W) football team was edged out by a 22-21 score in a road game against Gilbert-Northwestern (G-N) at Gilbert High School on Oct. 12. The Rams had a chance to win the game late, but missed a 31-yard field goal with 24 seconds left, and dropped to 1-4 on the campaign.
Senior captain Cooper Pavlovich carried the ball 24 times for 111 yards and a touchdown in the contest. Pavlovich broke off a 20-yard run to set up the Rams’ first touchdown on a 2-yard run from Ed Fernandes, then kicked the extra point to give OS-W a 7-0 lead.
Down 10-7 at the half, the Rams went up 15-10 on Pavlovich’s two-yard TD run and subsequent extra point. G-N came back with another touchdown to take a 16-15 edge with four minutes remaining in the third quarter.
Senior captain Jack McDowell scored on an 8-yard touchdown run to return the lead to the Rams. Pavlovich’s extra point made it 21-16 going into the fourth quarter. G-N scored the last touchdown of the game during the final period and then hung on for the win.
Next up, the Rams will visit North Branford for a noon start at Colafati Field on Saturday, Oct. 19.
Boys’ Soccer
The Rams prevailed in both of their games last week to improve to 7-2-2 and clinch a bid in the Class S State Tournament.
On Oct. 7, Old Saybrook defeated Haddam-Killingworth by a 3-0 score to seal its spot in states. Four days later, the Rams recorded a 6-0 shutout against North Branford.
Girls’ Soccer
Old Saybrook defeated Amistad before taking defeats against Haddam-Killingworth and North Branford last week.
On Oct. 7, the Rams posted a 5-0 shutout over Amistad. Two days later, Old Saybrook lost to Haddam-Killingworth by a 3-2 score. Then on Oct. 12, Old Saybrook dropped a 2-0 decision versus North Branford.
Field Hockey
Old Saybrook played three games last week and came away with one victory to move to 6-4.
The Rams blanked Waterford by a 4-0 score on Oct. 7. Then on Oct. 11, Old Saybrook lost a 4-0 contest against North Branford. The next day, Old Saybrook took a 2-0 defeat to Suffield.
In the Waterford game, Kayla Holt, Grace Adams, Leah Wysocki, and Kristina Alsante each scored a goal each for the Rams. Taylor Stone, Libby Stuart, and Wysocki had assists in the victory. Wendy Bowden turned aside eight shots in goal to get the shutout.
