The North Haven Junior American Legion baseball squad completed its season by splitting the last four games of the campaign in Zone 2 action last week. Post 76 took a loss to Madison, gained a split with West Haven in a doubleheader that saw both games go to extra innings, and then defeated Naugatuck to close out the year. North Haven finished with a record of 10-15 in Zone 2 and went 11-19 overall on the campaign.
Post 76 took a 3-2 loss at Madison in the rubber game of a three-game series on July 14. North Haven was trailing 2-0 in the top of the fourth inning when Anthony Acampora singled home Mike Anquillare to cut it to 2-1. Madison tacked on an insurance run in the fifth inning to make it a 3-1 game. In the top of the seventh, Ryan Cannon drove in Ryan Balzano on a bunt to make the score 3-2. However, Post 76 was unable to get the tying run across as Madison held on to win the game and take the series.
Balzano pitched a complete game for North Haven in which he allowed three runs (1 earned) on four hits with six strikeouts in six innings. Anquillare went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored to lead the Post 76 offense.
On July 16, North Haven split a doubleheader against West Haven on the road. Post 76 notched a 6-3 victory in eight innings for the opening game. In the nightcap, West Haven defeated North Haven by the final score of 3-2 in 12 innings.
The first game was knotted at 1-1 when North Haven broke loose for five runs in the top of the eighth inning. Post 76 took the lead on an error by West Haven, after which Jason Senberg drew a bases-loaded walk to force in a run and make it 3-1. Owen Pincince followed with a three-run double that cleared the bases and put North Haven up 6-1. West Haven came back with two runs in the bottom of the eighth, but Harrison Rainey came out of the bullpen to get final out of the game and secure the 6-3 victory for Post 76.
Robert Farrelly earned the win on the mound by pitching 7.2 innings, allowing three runs (2 earned) on just three hits. Rainey notched the save by retiring the last batter with two men on base.
Pincince went 3-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI for North Haven. Anthony Denya was 2-for-4 with a run, Ryan Balzano went 1-for-2 with two walks and a run, and Ty Rooney added an RBI double in the victory.
In the second game, Post 76 was trailing 2-1 entering the top of the seventh inning, but tied the game when Rooney scored on a groundout by Balzano. The game stayed tied until the bottom of the 12th inning when West Haven plated the winning run to get the walk-off victory and split the doubleheader.
Cannon got the start on the hill and allowed two runs (1 earned) on four hits in 5.1 innings. Rainey took the hard-luck loss after turning in stellar outing in relief for North Haven. Rainey threw six innings and gave up just one run on five hits to go with six strikeouts.
