Valley Baseball Loses Close Contest in Shoreline Quarters; Softball Finishes Regular Season with 19 Wins

Baseball

The Valley baseball team opened up play in the Shoreline Conference Tournament against North Branford last week. The Warriors lost a tough 2-1 quarterfinal to the Thunderbirds. Valley moved its record to has a record of 11-10 and is playing in this week’s Class M State Tournament.

On May 20, Valley had a hard time mustering any offense against the Thunderbirds, but still managed to threaten late in the games.

North Branford took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning, and the Thunderbirds tacked on another run in the fifth inning to make it 2-0. The Warriors fought back in the sixth inning to cut the lead in half with a run, but couldn’t get another run in the seventh.

Softball

The Valley Regional softball squad played a game to close the book n the regular season last week. The Warriors scored a win over Haddam-Killingworth to improve their record to 19-1 on the year and will play in the Shoreline Conference and Class M State Tournaments this week.

On May 21, the Warriors headed to Haddam-Killingworth and scored a 4-0 road win against the Cougars. The contest looked like it was going to be a pitcher’s duel, and it really was through the first fice scoreless innings, but then Valley went off for four runs in the sixth to produce all the it would need.

Addy Bullis turned in another fin outing from the rubber, pitching a three hitter over seven innings and striking out 16 batters. Bullis also notched a pair of hits and scored a run for the Warriors. Lauren Allen supplied a hit and scored a run, while Lexi Ross had two base knocks with a run scored.

Mercedes Peno provided a big double and drove in two runs, and Vivian Paradis added a hit and an RBI.

Girls’ Tennis

The Warriors were named regular season co-champions along with Old Lyme and took part in the Shoreline Conference Tournaments last week. Valley’s Jessica Weinstein defeated Westbrook’s Julia Farnoli in a 7-5, 6-3 match to be named the No. 3-4 singles champion.

In the doubles final, Allie Champion and Ada Ramos netted a 7-5, 6-3 victory and claimed the doubles’ title.

All three tourney winners earned All-Shoreline Conference first team honors for taking part in the final. Earning All-Shoreline Conference second team with the Warriors were Francesca Pisanzio, Taylor Harpin, and Caroline Baldwin.

Boys’ Lacrosse

After turning in an overall record of 8-8 this season, the Warriors play in the Class S State Tournament this week. Valley enters the fray as the No. 18 seed, and the tournament begins Saturday, May 25 with the qualifying rounds and will end on Saturday, June 8 in the tournament final at Brien McMahon High School in Norwalk.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Valley girls’ lacrosse team’s season concluded with a home contest against Fitch this week. The Warriors lost a 14-8 decision against the Falcons on May 20. With the defeat, Valley’s 2019 campaign comes to an end with a 6-9 overall record.

The Warriors battled Fitch closely in the first half, only trailing 6-5 by the intermission. The Falcons came on in the second half, however, and outpaced Valley 8-3 to reach the 14-8 final.

Crew

The Valley Regional Crew competed in the Connecticut Public Schools Rowing Association Championship Regatta on May 19. Conditions on the day included plenty of sun beginning in the morning. As the day wore on, a cross-tail wind built up to 10-15 miles per hour.

The girls’ made it to the final heat with their first boat of four and took second place with a time of 5:40.6. The Warriors second boat of four came in fourth place with a time of 6:11.2. The third boat of four grabbed third place with a time of 6:16.4. The girls’ also had a novice boat of four, which came in third place with a time of 6:45.1.

In the boys’ races, the Warriors’ first boat of four came in fourth place with a time of 5:34.6. The boys also raced a novice boat of four and came in third place with a time of 6:11.

Golf

The Valley Regional golf squad competed at the Shoreline Conference Championship held at Stanley Golf Course in New Britain last week.

Valley came in 10th place as a team with an overall score of 440. Henry McPherson was the low man for the Warriors with a score of 106 to take 42nd place. Sam Craco was right behind him in 43rd place with a tally of 107. Jake Castellano came in 45th with a score of 111, while Logan Bellos was 48th with 116 strokes. Zachary Figuenick came in 49th place with a score of 118.
