Morgan Baseball Scores Walk-Off Win Over Cromwell; Boys’ Tennis Gains a Split

The Morgan baseball team had a pair games on last week’s slate and took home wins in both contests. The Huskies record improved to 6-8 on the season.
On April 29, Morgan picked up an exciting 1-0 home win in extra innings against Cromwell. It would ultimately take nine innings to determine a winner in the game when Morgan scored a walk-off victory. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Mike Menacho was hit by a pitch to get on base. While Ryan Egan was at the plate, Menacho stole second base. Then Egan laced a single to center field driving in Menacho for the victory.
Connor Derry went the distance for the Huskies throwing nine innings of shut out baseball with six strikeouts to get the win.
Two days later, Morgan had a much less nerve-wracking game when they faced off against Valley Regional in Deep River. The Huskies scored a 10-3 road victory against the Warriors.
Morgan scored two runs in the first inning and another in the second to take a 3-0 lead, but the Warriors got a run back in the bottom of the second to close the gap slightly to 3-1. In the third inning, the Huskies’ offense let loose for five runs, and after adding two more in the top of the fourth, Morgan cruised to victory.
Egan had a two hit performance to go with two runs and an RBI. Kyle Burt added two hits, two RBI, and a run, while Chase Morris has a hit and three RBI. Ryan Hromadka went 3-for-4 with two RBI, and Garret Garbinski had a pair of hits to go with two runs. Menacho had a hit and scored three runs. AJ Fritz added two hits, and Michael Zingeralla notched a hit, as well. Robbie Zirlis pitched a complete game for the win and he struck out five.
Boys’ Tennis
Morgan took home a split in a pair of matches in last week. The victories improved the Huskies’ record to 8-4 on the year.
On May 1, the Huskies lost a 4-3 home decision against Westbrook.
The next day, Morgan defeated Old Lyme in a 5-2 road match. On the singles courts, Garrett Johnson earned a 6-1, 6-4 win at the No. 2 spot. JP Nye netted a 6-4, 6-0 victory at the No. 3 position, and Sean Arribas Cockley earned a hard-fought 4-6, 7-5, 11-9 battle in the No. 4 match. In the No. 5 spot, Calvin Jackson snagged a 6-4, 6-0 win. In doubles, the No. 2 duo of Logan Cummings and Tyler Greenhouse claimed a 6-3, 6-4 win.
Softball
The Huskies had a pair of games last week and were defeated in both of them. With the losses, Morgan’s record drops to 4-11 on the season.
On April 29, the Huskies hosted Cromwell at Peters Complex a took a 14-1 defeat to the Panthers. Two days later, Morgan lost a 4-3 road contest at Valley Regional.
Girls’ Lacrosse
The Huskies lost their lone contest of the week last week. The defeat drops Morgan’s record to 5-6 on the season.
On May 2, the Huskies headed to North Branford where they took a 15-8 road defeat against the Thunderbirds.
Girls’ Tennis
The Huskies split a pair of matches last week. The win and loss resulted in Morgan’s record shifting to 3-9 on the year.
On April 29, Morgan earned a 4-3 home win against Portland. The Huskies only managed one win in singles in the No. 2 match from Bea Atengco in a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 decision.
Morgan swept the doubles matches with No. 1 duo Becca Cockley and Melanie Coretti getting a 6-2, 6-0 win. At the No. 2 spot, Ingrid Rodriguez and Sydney Fratamico netted a 6-2, 6-1 victory. The No. 3 pair of Misha Rai and Mia DiMetro got the 6-4, 6-1 win.
Two days later, the Huskies lost a 6-1 road match at Westbrook. Morgan got it’s lone win from the No. 4 singles match in Maddie Tuccitto 6-3, 6-3 victory.
Boys’ Lacrosse
Morgan played a pair of contests last week and took losses in both. The Huskies’ record fell to 6-6 on the season with the defeats.
On May 2, Morgan hosted North Branford at the Indian River Complex and lost a 5-2 decision against the Thunderbirds. North Branford posted an early 4-0 advantage in the first half, and the Huskies chipped away with two goals after the intermission but could not catch up. Ford Pender and Sean Fitzgerald provided a goal apiece in the loss. Matt Lee dished an assist. Matt Luchuk made 14 saves in net.
Two days later, the Huskies headed to Bacon Academy where they took a 14-8 loss. Morgan trailed 6-1 after the first half, and the Bobcats added to their lead in the second half. Zak Johnson supplied two goals and an assist, while Ryan Caldwell notched two goals and three assists. Pender provided three goals and one assist, and Fitzgerald added one goal and one assist. Tim Lichack scored a goal in the loss. Luchuck made 15 saves on the day.
Golf
Morgan got three matches in last week and won one of the three. With these results, the Huskies record moved to 3-6 overall.
On April 29, Morgan hosted Valley Regional at the Clinton Country Club and claimed a 187-220 victory over the Warriors. Top performers for the Huskies were Jason Cohen, who shot a 42, and Trevor Rohrbacher, who turned in a score of 46.
Two days later, Portland was in town, and the Huskies lost a 162-193 home contest against the Highlanders. The best performance for Morgan came from Cohen (44) and Rohrbacher (45).
On May 2, the Huskies headed to the TPC River Highlands to go up against Cromwell. Morgan took a narrow 183-186 defeat to the Panthers. Ethan Tessman turned in a score of 44 strokes in the loss.
