Old Saybrook Boys’ Hoops Takes Down Coginchaug; Track Teams Prevail at Coaches Invitational
Boys’ Basketball
The Old Saybrook boys’ basketball team played one game last week when the Rams matched up against Shoreline Conference foe Coginchaug. The Rams posted their third straight win by defeating the Blue Devils 56-43 on Jan. 11, while running their record to 4-3 on the season.
The Rams received another stellar performance from senior Shane Henderson, who scored 18 points to go along with six assists and six rebounds in the win. Fellow senior Paddy Ryan had 14 points and seven rebounds, while junior Mike Almada scored 12 points for Old Saybrook. Junior Davis Brown contributed eight points with five assists, and senior Kam Baker pulled down eight boards.
“It was a great overall team win in a tough gym. Everyone contributed, and Paddy did a great job jumping into a starting role,” said Head Coach Patrick Quinn. “We were 9-for-12 from the foul line, which helped the cause. We came out rebounding much better in the second half, led by Kam Baker and Paddy Ryan.”
Girls’ Basketball
The Rams moved to 1-7 after taking defeats against Amistad and Coginchaug last week.
On Jan. 7, the Rams took 58-50 road loss against Amistad in a hard-fought contest. Mandy Beck turned in an outstanding effort by scoring 24 points and grabbing nine rebounds for the Rams. The game was tied 16-16 after the first quarter, and Amistad held a 31-27 edge at the half. Amistad was up by eight when Beck sank a shot from beyond the half-court line at the buzzer to make it 46-41 at the end of the third quarter. Amistad was able to hold off Old Saybrook in the fourth quarter to come away with the eight-point win. Priscilla Gumkowski had 11 points, and Jenna Tully scored six points for the Rams.
On Jan. 11, Old Saybrook hosted Coginchaug and lost 90-41. Coginchaug held a 48-24 halftime advantage on its way to the win. Beck played a solid overall game with 17 points, 10 rebounds, four steals, and five assists. Gumkowski added 12 points for Old Saybrook.
Boys’ Indoor Track
The Rams took first place in the Shoreline Coaches Invitational at Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven on Jan. 12. Old Saybrook scored 67 points to finish tops out of the 26 teams at the meet.
Jack Colella netted significant points for the Rams by posting a first-place finish in the 300-meter dash behind a time of 37.15 seconds. Colella also ran with Cooper Luciani, Luke Hanratty, and Shon Ryan on Old Saybrook’s 4x400 relay that claimed first place with a time of 3:40.13.
Girls’ Outdoor Track
Old Saybrook finished in first place at the Shoreline Coaches Invitational last week. The Rams nabbed the top spot in the 29-team field by totaling 64 points on the afternoon.
The Rams saw a first-place finish from their 4x800 relay quartet of Jessica Stratton, Emily Stratton, Tehra Givehand, and Caitlin Wiley, who finished with a time of 10:08.26 at the invitational. Grace Hanratty took first place in the 1,000 with a time of 3:03.71. In the high jump, Rachel Vigorita cleared a height of 4 feet-10 inches to take home first-place honors.
