H-K’s Track Teams Finish Regular Season Strong; Baseball Ready for Shorelines
Boys’ and Girls’ Outdoor Track
On May 16, the Haddam-Killingworth boys’ and girls’ outdoor track teams traveled to Morgan High School to wrap up their dual-meet seasons by competing against the Huskies. The boys defeated Morgan 111-29 to finish with an 11-0 record, while the girls’ team concluded its dual-meet season at 10-1 after posting a 97-41 victory versus the Huskies.
Leading the way for the H-K boys were the following event winners: Dalton Modehn in the long jump (18-5) and triple jump (38-7), Luke Sodergren for the 110 hurdles (16.8), Seth Regan in the 100 (11.5), Christian Uzwiak in the 1,600 (4:55), Andrew Meredith for the 800 (2:05), Conor McCabe in the 3,200 (10:28), Dalton Brown with the 200 (23.7), Colton Lavioe for the shot put (41-1), Chase Mack in the discus (112-2), and Wally Sample in the javelin (130-6). H-K’s 4x100, 4x400 and 4x800 relays were also victorious.
For the girls’ team, Veronica Chrzanowski won all four of her events by placing first in the 100 (12.8), 200 (27.3), long jump (16-8), and triple jump (34-1). Autumn Coady won the 100 hurdles (17.2), Sadie Strom took first in the 300 hurdles (49.8), Hailey Cassidy captured victory in the 1,600 (5:45), Ashley Duncan won the 400 (64.0), Kelsey D’Amico won the 800 (2:32), Gabby Wyzokowski was first in the shot put (26-2), Emma Anderson took first for the high jump (4-6), and Riley Jenkins won the javelin (81-4). The Cougars’ 4x400 and 4x800 relays also claimed first place at the meet.
Baseball
Haddam-Killingworth won its last three games of the regular season to finish with a record of 18-2. The Cougars will now compete in the Shoreline Conference Tournament.
The Cougars shut out Morgan by a 7-0 score on May 14. Jon Civiello scattered four hits in six innings and added a hit with two RBI to lead the Cougars. Ross Meglin, Darren Hiller, Jackson Parmentier, Alec Erskine, and Kyle Crandall each had two hits for H-K.
H-K then defeated Ellington by a 9-1 final on May 17. Christopher Garrelts scattered three hits to pick up the complete-game win. Civiello had a double, triple, and three RBI, while Owen Marica hit three doubles and scored three runs in the victory.
The Cougars then earned a forfeit victory over Prince Tech for a game that was slated to be played on May 18.
H-K is competing in the Shoreline Conference Tournament this week. The quarterfinals and semifinals took place earlier this week; the final will be held on Friday, May 25 at the Indian River Complex in Clinton.
Softball
The Cougars split a pair of high-scoring contests last week and are now 10-8 this year. H-K dropped a 13-12 slugfest against Hale-Ray on May 14 and then rebounded with an 11-10 win over Woodstock Academy on May 18.
H-K rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to win its game against Woodstock Academy. Faith Mauri’s two-run triple set the stage for the comeback victory by closing the gap to 10-9. She then scored to tie the game at 10 on an infield ground-out by Amanda Minervino. Ali Halligan followed with a line-drive single to right-center field, after which Rachel Mauri hit a bloop single to right, advancing Halligan to third. The throw from the outfield to third got away, allowing Halligan to race home with the winning run for the Cougars.
Golf
The Cougars improved to 7-5 this year after winning three of their last four matchups.
H-K shot a 178 to sweep a tri-match against North Branford (183) and East Hampton (201) on May 14. Oliver Artus earned medalist honors with a score of 42, Kaisone Bounphakdy shot a 43, Ethan Campbell finished with a 46, and Greg Lynskey had a round of 47.
The Cougars then dropped a 166-197 decision to Portland the next day. Artus led H-K with a 42, while Lynskey shot a 50, Bounphakdy totaled a 51, and Campbell posted a score of 54.
H-K bounced back the following day with a 192-225 victory over Hale-Ray. Artus shot a round of 46, Andrew Kuehn scored a 48, while Lynskey and Bounphakdy both finished with a 49.
Girls’ Tennis
The Cougars earned a win to go with two defeats last week and are now 8-11 on the campaign.
H-K started the week with a 7-0 win over East Hampton/Hale-Ray on May 14. The Cougars then took a 5-2 loss to Cromwell on May 18. H-K lost by that same score against Old Lyme on May 18.
Boys’ Tennis
The Cougars finished their year with a mark of 2-16 after dropping four contests last week.
The Cougars took a 7-0 loss to East Hampton on May 14. H-K then lost both matches of a doubleheader against Cromwell by 7-0 finals on May 17. The Cougars closed their campaign with a 7-0 defeat to Old Lyme on May 18.
Boys’ Lacrosse
The Cougars split their last four matches of the 2018 campaign to finish it with a record of 6-10.
H-K lost an 11-6 final versus Old Lyme on May 14. The Cougars then took a 13-4 loss to Valley Regional on May 16. H-K scored a 6-5 win over Old Saybrook the next day and then earned an 8-7 victory over Watertown on May 18.
Girls’ Lacrosse
H-K took two recent defeats to finish its season with a record of 0-16.
The Cougars dropped a 14-4 matchup against to Old Lyme on May 15. The following day, H-K took a 15-6 loss against Old Saybrook.
