Morgan Boys’ Soccer Beats Cromwell in Shoreline Quarters; Daley Races to 2nd at States
Boys’ Soccer
The Morgan boys’ soccer team closed out its regular season last week and then won its Shoreline Conference Tournament opener against Cromwell. The Huskies have an overall record of 13-3-1.
On Oct. 25, the Huskies went up against Cromwell and won 3-1. Juan Avila notched a hat trick by scoring a goal in the 25th minute from James Saturno, in the 62nd minute on an assist from Jhan Carlos Bermeo, and in the 66th minute off an assist from Aedan Mahoney. Morgan launched 17 shots on goal to Cromwell’s six, and Anes Gadun had four saves for the Huskies.
The next day, Morgan played in its regular season finale against Old Saybrook and lost 7-0, while fielding a squad made up of mostly JV players. Gadun still got the start in net and managed to hold off Old Saybrook’s attack for most of the first half.
The day after that, Morgan played in the Shoreline Conference quarterfinals against familiar opponent Cromwell and won 6-1. Zach Tuccitto scored the first goal at the five-minute mark, but Cromwell responded quickly with a goal in the 13th minute. Morgan’s Jhonnyer Paida scored 27 minutes in, and Juan Avila added another five minutes later to make it 3-1. In the second half, Morgan scored three goals in 15 minutes to seal its victory: Saturno in the 51st minute, Ford Pender in the 61st minute, and Tuccitto for his second goal in the 66the minute. Saturno, Carter Skidmore, Calvin Jackson, Avila, and Tuccitto each had an assist, while Gadun made six saves on eight shots.
Girls’ Soccer
The Huskies earned a 2-1 win over Bethel last week to conclude the regular season at 12-2-2.
Alyssa LeMay got the scoring started with a goal at 7:35 off an assist from Courtney Viglione. Bethel responded with a goal at 13:36 to make it 1-1 going into intermission. In the second half, Viglione put in the go-ahead goal at the 51:36 mark to give Morgan a 2-1 lead. Goalie Rebecca Cockley had six saves on seven shots for the Huskies, who are competing in the Shoreline Conference Tournament this week.
Girls’ Cross Country
Several athletes had strong showings for Morgan at the Class SS State Championship at Wickham Park on Oct. 28, including Kate Daley, who raced her way to All-State accolades. The Huskies finished in 16th place as a team.
Daley, a senior, came in second place at states with a time of 20 minutes and 21 seconds to earn All-State honors. The Huskies’ other runners were Phoebe Sullivan (117th, 28:08), Leah McComiskey (119th, 28:30), Isabella Dowd (122nd, 28:39), and Taylor DiFilippo (125th, 29:26).
Boys’ Cross Country
The Huskies sent several competitors to the Class SS State Championship meet last week and placed 21st a squad.
Morgan’s runners at the state meet were Chayse Lofgren (53rd, 19:06), Thomas Southwood (58th, 19:20), Caleb Adams-Hull (136th, 21:11), Justin Mucha (143rd, 21:41), Aiden Maurais (149th, 21:52), Brett Martin (155th, 22:22), and Zachary Leach (164th, 23:30).
Field Hockey
Morgan split a pair of contests last week to finish the regular season with a mark of 4-9-3.
On Oct. 23, Morgan played Old Saybrook at home and lost 4-2. Three days later, the Huskies were on the road to face Somers and won their final game of the season by a 4-0 final.
Volleyball
Morgan dropped a pair of recent contests to complete the 2017 campaign at 7-12.
On Oct. 23, the Huskies played Coginchaug at home and lost 3-1 (25-20, 21-25, 25-12, 25-20). Georgia Nye had 14 kills, Charlotte Davenport had two blocks, Taylor Marnett had 25 digs, and Sara Kuever added 21 assists on the night.
Two days later, Morgan hosted Cromwell and took a 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, and 25-19) defeat. Nye had 15 kills and three aces, Madison Seeger added four blocks, while Marnett and Mackensie Anderson had 20 and 15 digs, respectively.
Football
Morgan played Lewis Mills on Oct. 28 and lost 29-0 final to move to 0-7 on the season. The Huskies will host Cromwell-Portland (6-1) at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 3
