Boys’ Swimming and Diving
Senior Teddy Zeng recorded his fourth victory at the State Diving Championship in as many years by winning the Class M crown with a score of 636.25 points on behalf of the Hand boys’ swimming and diving squad last week. Zeng’s mark broke the previous state record of 612.15 points and was well ahead of runner-up Liam Simmons of Weston, who scored a 392.75 at Bulkeley High School on March 9. Also competing for Hand were Declan Maloney, who finished seventh with 298 points; and Callahan Murphy who placed 20th with a total of 244.3.
Zeng had previously broken the record for the SCC Diving Championship with a score of 637.80 points when he recently prevailed at the conference meet for the fourth straight season. Zeng will go for his fourth consecutive State Open title when he dives at the State Open Championship, which takes place at Middletown High School at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 16.
Gymnastics
Erin Naclerio competed for the Tigers at the New England Championship at Woodstock Academy on March 11. Naclerio, a junior, recorded a score of 8.5 on the balance beam at the regional meet.
“They were very tight on the beam scores all day and we were pleased with her performance. She wanted to make it to New Englands and she did, so this was the end of her goal line for this year,” said Head Coach Kelly Smith. “Next year, she certainly wants to be in the field in more events and I think she can be.”
Girls’ Fencing
The Hand girls’ fencing team placed fourth in the girls’ foil competition at the Team State Championship at Norwich Free Academy on March 11. Chloe Moulin recorded an unblemished record of 12-0 on the day for the Tigers.
Boys’ Ice Hockey
The Tigers’ boys’ ice hockey squad took a 5-1 loss to No. 6 seed Cheshire in the first round of the Division II State Tournament on March 7. The Tiger, who were the No. 11 seed, recorded a mark of 9-11-1 on the campaign.
