Tigers’ Track, Wrestling Represent at State Open; Girls’ Hockey Loses in SCC Semis
Boys’ Indoor Track
The Tigers’ boys’ indoor track squad finished tied for 18th place by scoring eight points at the State Open Championship at the Floyd Little Athletic Center on Feb. 20.
Scoring points for Hand were Devon McShane, who placed third in the pole vault by reaching 14 feet; as well as Troy Lefler, who took fifth in the 55-meter hurdles by running a time of 7.89 seconds. Lefler also took eighth in the long jump at 20-6.25, while McShane and Quincey Heinrich tied for 14th in high jump by clearing 5-8.
Also competing for the Tigers was the 4x200 relay of Ethan McMahon, Liam Akers, Matt Parker, and Warren Hartmann (13th, 1:36.09); the 4x400 relay in Parker, John Lisi, Hartmann, and Max Veth (10th, 3:35.42); and the 4x800 relay of John Lisi, Tyler Bennard, Jamie Calderon, and Mark Lisi (16th, 9:01.83).
Girls’ Indoor Track
Hand recorded seven points and came in tied for 25th place at the State Open Championship last week.
Caroline O’Neil scored points for the Tigers by finishing third in the 300-meter run with a time of 40.35 seconds and sixth in the 55-meter dash in 7.38 seconds.
The Tigers’ 4x400 relay of Megan Phillips, Gabby Harmon, Abigail Walton, and O’Neil came in eighth behind a time of 4:10.04.
Wrestling
The Tigers finished tied for 19th place with 40 points for the State Open Championship that took place on Feb. 24 and 25 at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven.
Michael Burchell finished third in the 285-pound weight class for the Tigers, while Mark Hartmann was fifth in the 120 bracket. Also for Hand, Zakery Santoemma won two bouts in the 145-pound weight class, Christian Westphal claimed a victory at 220, and Dylan Brochard and Adam Hendrick competed in the 113- and 160-pound weight classes, respectively, for the Tigers.
Girls’ Ice Hockey
No. 3 seed Hand took a 4-1 loss to No. 2 Amity-North Haven-Cheshire in a SCC Division II Tournament semifinal at The Rinks at Shelton on Feb. 20. The Tigers finished the year with an overall record of 11-8-2.
Boys’ Ice Hockey
Hand took a 2-1 loss to Branford in the President’s Tournament at Northford Ice Pavilion on Feb. 20. The Tigers finished the regular season with a record of 9-10-1 thanks to a 3-2 win over New Fairfield-Immaculate on Feb. 24.
The Tigers next compete in the Division II State Tournament, which begins next week.
Boys’ Swimming and Diving
Hand bested Branford-Guilford by a 105-71 final on Feb. 22 to finish the dual-meet season with a record of 7-4.
Next up for the Tigers are the SCC and Class M State championships.
Boys’ Basketball
Hand dropped a 68-63 decision to Xavier on Feb. 20. The Tigers went 1-19 for the winter campaign.
