Hand Wrestling Grapples to 48-21 Win Over Prep in Opener; Girls’ Hockey 3-0

Hand opened the year with a 48-21 home win over Fairfield Prep on Dec. 14.
Victories for the Tigers came from Zakery Santoemma in the 152-pound weight class with a pin at 5:41, as well as from Adam Hendrick (160, pin at 3:21), Mitchel Kuperstein (182, forfeit), Brian McCabe (195, forfeit), Christian Westphal (220, pin at 0:33), Michael Burchell (285, forfeit), Kyle Davern (106, 5-0 decision), Mark Hartmann (120, forfeit), and Charles Jenson (138, 3-2 decision).
Last year at the SCC Championship, Head Coach Michael Docker and the Tigers finished third out of 13 clubs with 129.5 points. Connor Sakmar took first place in the 106-pound weight class for Hand by winning a 24-9 decision in the final. Luke Bernardo claimed a conference crown with a 6-3 victory via decision in the 170 bracket. Hand also had one runner-up in Michael Burchell, who took second in the 220 class.
For the Class L State Championship, Hand placed eighth out of 26 teams with 118.5 points. Liam Sullivan was a state champion for the Tigers by defeating Charles Schultz of New Milford, 5-4, in the final of the 132-pound weight class.
Girls’ Ice Hockey
The Tigers were on the ice for a pair of games last week. Hand defeated Lauralton Hall 9-0 on Dec. 15 and then beat Notre Dame-Fairfield/Foran by a 1-0 final on Dec. 17 to improve to 3-0.
Boys’ Ice Hockey
Hand started the with a 5-0 loss to Fairfield Warde-Ludlowe. Th game took place on Dec. 17.
