12/30/2018 11:00 PMWhen retired teacher Jean Gordon moved from a large house to Masonicare at Mystic in the spring of 2017, she knew right away "this was the best move." She and her cat Cuddles settled easily into the community.
"There's so much to do here," says this computer-savvy lady who quickly became editor of a monthly newsletter for fellow residents.
The community opened in late 2016. Just a third of a mile from the Mystic Aquarium, it features 176 apartments for independent living, assisted living and memory care.
"We are a rental model, which we fi nd off ers seniors more fi nancial fl exibility than they may encounter elsewhere," notes Marketing Manager Lauren Dubuque. "And our residents have a bounty of things to do. Wellness and fi tness buff s can enjoy water aerobics in our heated indoor salt water pool. After drying off , they can go to one of our daily exercise or Zumba classes, take up country line dancing, or go for a brisk walk on one of the trails at the nature preserve next door. We also have a game room, pub, art studio, and library."
Catherine Pratt moved to Masonicare at Mystic to be closer to her daughter in Stonington. When asked how the move went, Catherine doesn't hesitate: "It felt like home the minute I moved in."
The community's assisted living apartments have full-size baths and a kitchenette (three meals a day are part of the assisted living monthly rent).
"Our memory care apartments are studios with good natural light," notes Dubuque, "and located adjacent to inviting common areas to foster social engagement and a sense of belonging."
Hilde Sager, vice president of residential living for Masonicare, describes the vision for the community: "We believe this is the future of senior living–wide open spaces, lots to do, and a very homey feel along with an array of amenities and support services.
