Police Incident Report for Feb. 28 to March 20


The Valley Courier publishes a Police Incident Report to inform residents of incidents, criminal activities, and police responses occurring in the towns of Essex, Deep River, and Chester. As those charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty, the report does not include names. It may be edited for space and content.

Chester

Wednesday, Feb. 28 to Tuesday, March 6

Wednesday, March 7

No arrests were made.

• A 32 year-old Portland man was issued a citation at 4:12 p.m. for traveling too fast for conditions. He was operating a 2003 Cadillac Seville when he lost control of the vehicle, spun out, and collided with a metal-beam guardrail. No injuries were reported or observed. The vehicle as towed from the scene due to disabling damage.

No arrests were made.

• A motor vehicle crash was investigated on West Main Street at 11:48 a.m. A 46 year-old man of Stow, Ohio, was operating a 2016 Freightliner 300 Deluxe tractor trailer eastbound on Route 148 (East Main Street) when the truck struck low-hanging tree branches. The fire department had placed barricades, but the barricades were missing when the truck driver entered the area near Bokum Road. Witnesses stated that the branches were hanging very low and reported that any motorist operating a truck with such a height should have seen the branches and not proceeded through the area. No enforcement actions were noted in the police press report.

Wednesday, Feb. 28

Thursday, March 1

• A 17 year-old was arrested at 11 a.m. and charged with criminal mischief in the third degree and breach of peace in the second degree (threatening). The alleged disturbance took place at Mount Saint John’s School on Kirtland Street.

• A 78 year-old man of Kirtland Street was issued a warning at 1:41 p.m. for unsafe backing. He was operating a 2006 Ford Explorer XLT in reverse out of a private driveway when he struck a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado C1500 operated by a 25 year-old Waterford man. No injuries were report or observed.

Friday, March 2 to Sunday, March 11

Monday, March 12

No arrests were made.

• A two-vehicle crash was investigated on Main Street at 9:30 a.m. A 26 year-old Bridgeport man was operating a 2001 Volvo from Main Street onto Bridge Street, making a left turn, when the Volvo sideswiped a 2004 BMW X3 operated by an 18 year-old Ivoryton man. No injuries were reported or observed. The BMW was towed from the scene due to disabling damage. No enforcement action was noted in the police press report.

Tuesday, March 13

Wednesday, March 14

• A 48 year-old man of Comstock Avenue, Essex, was arrested at 2:20 p.m. and charged with interfering with an officer/resisting arrest, breach of peace in the second degree, and threatening in the second degree. In the same incident a 39 year-old woman of the same residence was arrested and charged with breach of peace in the second degree and interfering with an officer/resisting arrest. Both parties went to Valley Regional High School in Deep River and created a disturbance at the school by swearing, screaming, and threatening staff and responding troopers while inside the school. The couple was removed and arrested. The man was processed on a $10,000 surety bond and the woman was processed on a $5,000 non-surety bond.

Essex

Wednesday, Feb. 28

No arrests were made.

• A motor vehicle crash was investigated at 8:52 a.m. A 31 year-old New London woman was operating a 2016 Subaru Legacy when she slowed abruptly to avoid a vehicle ahead and swerved to avoid contact. The Subaru struck a barrier at the side of the road and spun out before coming to final rest. The vehicle sustained disabling damage and full airbag deployment. The driver was transported to the Middlesex Hospital Shoreline Medical Clinic in Westbrook for evaluation and treatment of neck and back soreness. No enforcement action was taken against the driver.

Thursday, March 1 to Tuesday, March 13

Wednesday, March 14

No arrests were made.

• A 90 year-old man of River Road in Ivoryton was issued a citation at 4:27 p.m. for failure to maintain a reasonable distance apart. He was operating a 2005 Chrysler Town & Country LX on Main Street just 50 feet east of Westbrook Road in Centerbrook when he struck the rear of a 2017 Volkswagen Tiquan operated by a 46 year-old woman of Meadow Wood Road who was stopped for traffic in front of her. No injuries were reported or observed.

Thursday, March 15 to Monday, March 19

No arrests were made.

Tuesday, March 20

A 50 year-old Old Saybrook man was arrested at 7:45 p.m. and charged with bribery of a witness (via text messaging) and violation of probation following an investigation on West Avenue. He was processed on a $50,000 surety bond.
