Police Incident Report for Dec. 20 to 26


The Valley Courier publishes a Police Incident Report to inform residents of incidents, criminal activities, and police responses occurring in the towns of Essex, Deep River, and Chester. As those charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty, the report does not include names. It may be edited for space and content.

Essex

Wednesday, Dec. 20

No arrests were made.

• An 85 year-old woman of Harmony Lane in Ivoryton was issued a written warning at 3:50 p.m. for failure to obey a stop sign. She was operating a 2005 Buick LeSabre Custom southbound on Mares Hill Road and had stopped at the stop sign at the Westbrook Road intersection. The warned driver then attempted to make a left turn onto Westbrook Road. When the vehicle proceeded southbound to cross the westbound lane of Westbrook Road, the right side of its front bumper and fender struck the right front fender, wheel, and doors of a 2018 Subaru Crosstrek that was operated by a 24 year-old south Windsor woman. No injuries were reported or observed.

• A 23 year-old Old Lyme woman was issued a misdemeanor summons at 10:06 p.m. for evading responsibility in the operation of a motor vehicle (fleeing the scene of an accident). The crash occurred on Route 153.

• A 19 year-old Old Saybrook man was issued a citation at 1:47 a.m. for traveling too fast for conditions. He was operating a 1998 Mercury Sable LS eastbound on Route 153 when the vehicle slid on the wet road while the driver was making a left turn. No injuries were reported or observed.

Monday, Dec. 25

Tuesday, Dec. 26

• A 53 year-old woman of Main Street in Ivoryton was issued a citation at 11:29 a.m. for unsafe backing. She was operating a 1998 Chevrolet Lumina out of her driveway when she was struck by a 2014 GMC Acadia operated by a 52 year-old who was traveling eastbound on Main Street. The operator of the GMC made an evasive maneuver to his left, but was unable to avoid collision. The investigating officer observed the crash as it happened. No injuries were reported or observed.

Wednesday, Dec. 27 to Friday, Dec. 29

Saturday, Dec. 30

No arrests were made.

• A 17 year-old Chester boy was issued a citation at 1:45 p.m. for traveling too fast for conditions. He was operating a 2010 Volkswagen Jetta TDi southbound on South Winds Drive when he slid on snow, went off the roadway, and struck a concrete mailbox post and a wire-rope guardrail. The operator stated that he did not believe he was traveling too fast, and that the car started to slide in the snow while going through a curve. No injuries were reported or observed.

Monday, Jan. 1

• A 17 year-old boy of Windsor Lane in Ivoryton was issued a citation at 10:20 a.m. for traveling too fast for conditions. He was operating a 2001 Volvo S80 northbound on Deep River Road when he lost control of the vehicle, veered left across the southbound lane, and struck the right side of a parked and unoccupied 2007 Toyota Camry owned by a Middletown woman. The cited driver stated that he hit his head on the steering wheel during the crash. He was transported to the Middlesex Hospital Shoreline Medical Center in Westbrook for evaluation.

• A 19 year-old Old Lyme man was issued a citation at 10:23 a.m. for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart. He was operating a 2004 Toyota Sienna northbound on Route 154 near Fordham Avenue when he struck the rear of a 2010 Volvo XC60 that was operated by a 20 year-old Old Lyme man. Both vehicles were towed from the scene due to heavy damage. No injuries were reported or observed.

• A motor vehicle crash was investigated on Kirtland Street at 12:26 a.m. An unknown operator of an unknown vehicle bearing a Connecticut marker plate struck the front of a parked 2013 Subaru Impreza Sport Premium. The offending driver fled the scene.

Sunday, Dec. 24 to Monday, Dec. 25

Tuesday, Dec. 26

• A 22 year-old man of Village Street was arrested at 1:38 p.m. on a warrant charging him with violation of probation/conditional discharge.

Wednesday, Dec. 27 to Friday, Dec. 29

Saturday, Dec. 30

• A motor vehicle crash in which the offending driver fled the scene was investigated on Main Street at 12:42 a.m. An unknown driver was operating northbound on Route 154 (Main Street) when he or she struck an Eversource electrical pole located on the right shoulder. The driver fled the scene. Police determined that the unknown vehicle sustained rear end damage. Eversource responded to the scene to repair the pole.

• A 32 year-old Westbrook man was issued a misdemeanor summons at 7:35 a.m. for reckless driving and operating a motor vehicle while under license or registration suspension.

• A 42 year-old Westbrook man was issued a citation at 7:43 a.m. for failure to maintain a reasonable distance apart. He was operating a 2003 Ford Excursion southbound on Route 148 (Winthrop Road) when he struck the rear of a 2002 Grumman LLV that had slowed to turn left into 29 Winthrop Road. No injuries were reported or observed.

• A 27 year-old East Haven man was issued a citation at 11:51 p.m. for failure to maintain the proper lane of a multiple lane highway. He was operating a 2004 Chevrolet Colorado eastbound on Railroad Avenue when he failed to maintain the travel lane on a left curve in front of 10 Railroad Avenue. The vehicle collided with a metal wire guardrail located on the right shoulder, rolled over, and then struck a fence and a tree. The vehicle was towed by Mal’s Auto. No injuries were reported or observed.

Sunday, Dec. 24

• A 23 year-old Meriden man was arrested at 8:58 a.m. and charged with interfering with an officer (non-assaultive), reckless driving, and disobeying the signal of an officer. He was processed on a $5,000 bond.

Monday, Dec. 25 to Wednesday, Dec. 27

• An 18 year-old man of Hickory Hill Drive was issued a citation at 1:37 a.m. for failure to maintain the proper lane of a multiple-lane highway. He was operating a 2002 Subaru Forester northbound on Straits Road when he lost control of the vehicle and the passenger side struck a stone wall and mail box in front of #21 Straits Road. The vehicle continued on and hit a utility pole across the street from #23 Straits Road. The vehicle as towed from the scene. No injuries were reported or observed.

• A 21 year-old man of Turkey Hill Road was issued a citation at 4:13 p.m. for traveling too fast for conditions. He was operating a 2004 Volkswagen Jetta GLS when he lost control of the vehicle in snowy, very slick conditions while descending a steep hill on South Wig Hill Road, slid off the roadway, and struck a rock. The vehicle’s undercarriage was damaged. No injuries were reported or observed.
