Police Incident Report for Aug. 16 to Sept. 12


The Valley Courier publishes a Police Incident Report to inform residents of incidents, criminal activities, and police responses occurring in the towns of Essex, Deep River, and Chester. As those charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty, the report does not include names. It may be edited for space and content.

Essex

Wednesday, Aug. 16

No arrests were made.

Thursday, Aug. 17

No arrests were made.

• A 21 year-old Griswold man was issued a citation a 1:38 p.m. for failure to maintain the proper lane of a multiple lane highway after the 2008 Saturn Aura he was operating crossed the center line and struck the side of a 2008 Ford Econoline operated by a 25 year-old Meriden woman. No injuries were reported or observed as a result of the crash.

• A 24 year-old Higganum man was issued a citation at 4:44 p.m. for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart after the 2004 Toyota Highlander he was operating eastbound on Westbrook Road struck the rear of a 1998 Ford Explorer operated by a 30 year-old man of Winthrop Hill Road. The Explorer was stopped for its driver to make a left turn onto Mares Hill Road. Both vehicles sustained only minor damage. No injuries were reported or observed.

Friday, Aug. 18 to Sunday, Aug. 20

No arrests were made.

Monday, Aug. 21

No arrests were made.

• A 74 year-old Old Lyme woman was issued a citation at 12:50 p.m. for failure to maintain the proper lane of a multiple lane highway after she drove off the roadway while operating a 2006 Toyota Avalon and struck a wire-rope guardrail. The operator reported no injuries.

Tuesday, Aug. 22

No arrested were made.

• A 50 year-old East Haddam woman was issued a written warning at 4:53 p.m. for failure to drive right after she veered to the right while operating a 2017 GMC Acadia and struck an embankment on the right side of the roadway. Both right tires were flattened by the impact with the embankment and the vehicle sustained minor damage to the right fender and door. Neither the driver nor her 28 year-old female passenger of the same residence were injured. Mal’s Auto towed the vehicle.

Wednesday, Aug. 23 to Thursday, Aug. 31

Friday, Sept. 1

No arrests were made.

• A 55 year-old man of Bushy Hill Road in Ivoryton was issued a citation at 5:13 p.m. for failure to grant right of way at an intersection after he turned the 2000 Mazda Protégé he was operating to the left and entered the oncoming path of a 2004 Volkswagen Golf GLS operated by a 42 year-old Harwinton woman. The crash occurred at the intersection of Route 154 and 153. Minor injuries were reported as a result of the collision.

Saturday, Sept. 2

No arrests were made.

Sunday, Sept. 3

• A motor vehicle theft was investigated at 100 Main Street in Ivoryton at 1:59 a.m. The vehicle, a gold 2004 Chevrolet Colorado bearing Connecticut registration plate AA31090, was taken the prior day between 7:45 and 11:40 p.m. The vehicle was located abandoned after the operator crash through a wire-rope guardrail and went down a 100-foot embankment in the median. The vehicle came to rest on its passenger side. Neither rescue personal nor Connecticut State Police K-9 tacking were able to locate the occupant(s). The case was still under investigation at the time the police press information was released. The vehicle belonged to a 25 year-old man of an apartment located at 100 Main Street, who reported the vehicle stolen.

Monday, Sept. 4 to Wednesday, Sept. 6

No arrests were made.

Thursday, Sept. 7

• A 72 year-old man of Main Street was arrested at 12:08 p.m. on a warrant charging him with larceny in the first degree (by embezzlement). The accused transferred hundreds of thousands of dollars from the accounts of his clients. Several search and seizure warrants showed that funds were improperly transferred to his personal investment accounts and used for numerous retail purchases. He was processed on a $50,000 surety bond.

Wednesday, Aug. 16 to Thursday, Aug. 17

Friday, Aug. 18

• A 22 year-old Newington man was arrested at 3:11 a.m. on a warrant charging with driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, failure to drive upon the right, and assault in the second degree for an incident that occurred on April 8.

Saturday, Aug. 19

No arrests were made.

• A 20 year-old Cromwell man was issued a citation at 9:20 a.m. for failure to maintain the proper lane of a multiple lane highway after she lost control of the 2003 Honda Accord she was operating and struck a metal-beam guardrail. No injuries were reported or observed.

• A 20 year-old Higganum man and a 38 year-old Kensington woman were each issued a citation at 9:43 a.m. for failure to maintain a reasonable distance apart following a three car pile-up. No injuries were reported or observed among the driver’s or passengers of the three involved vehicles.

• An arrest warrant was issued for a Deep River man following an assault during the retrieval of a boat from the water at Deep River Landing. The case was still under investigation at the time of the police press report.

Sunday, Aug. 20

• A 54 year-old man of Lynn Road was arrested at 6:35 p.m. and charged with disorderly conduct and assault in the third degree following a domestic dispute. He was processed and released after posting a $5,000 surety bond.

Monday, Aug. 21 to Friday, Aug. 25

No arrests were made.

Saturday, Aug. 26

No arrests were made.

• A motor vehicle accident was investigated on Main Street at 7:18 p.m. An unknown driver/vehicle pulled out from a parking space and struck a 2004 Subaru Forester that was being operated by a 23 year-old woman of High Street. The operator of the unknown vehicle fled the scene. No injuries were reported or observed. The offending driver was wanted for evading responsibility in the operation of a motor vehicle (fleeing the scene of an accident) and the case was still under investigation of the time the police press report was issued.

Sunday, Aug. 27 to Friday, Sept. 1

Saturday, Sept. 2

No arrests were made.

• A 31 year-old man of Bokum Road was issued a warning at 2:13 p.m. for failure to maintain a reasonable distance apart after the 2013 Ford Edge he was operating on Route 80 at Warsaw Street struck the rear of a 2011 Volkswagen Jetta operated by a 22 year-old Moodus man. No injuries were reported or observed.

Sunday, Sept. 3

Monday, Sept. 4

• A 38 year-old man of Westbrook Road was arrested at 8:18 p.m. on a warrant charging him with assault in the second degree and reckless endangerment in the first degree following an investigation into an incident that occurred on Aug. 19 on River Street. The alleged victim was a 50 year-old person.

Tuesday, Sept. 5 to Wednesday, Sept. 6

Thursday, Sept. 7

• A 35 year-old woman of Main Street was issued a citation at 8:43 a.m. for making an improper right turn while operating a 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid. She took too wide a turn from Route 154 onto Winter Avenue and sideswiped a 2016 Subaru Outback operated by a 47 year-old woman of Winter Avenue. No injuries were reported or observed.

• An assault was investigated on Main Street at 10:23 p.m. A 21 year-old woman reported that she had been assaulted twice by her boyfriend during the week of July 30, while they were at the Deep River Library. An arrest warrant application was sent to Middlesex Superior Court for the man’s arrest.

• A 42 year-old Vermont woman was issued a citation at 2:49 a.m. for failure to drive right after she lost control of the 2003 Saab she was operating northbound on Kelsey Hill Road near Warsaw Street, went off the roadway, and struck a curb. No injuries were reported or observed.

• A 46 year-old Haddam man was issued a failure to drive right after he fell asleep while operating a 2001 Toyota Camry southbound on Cedar Lake Road, veered off the left side of the roadway, and struck a tree located off the left shoulder. He was transported to Middlesex Hospital for minor injuries sustained in the crash.

Wednesday, Aug. 23 to Thursday, Aug. 24

No arrests were made.

Friday, Aug. 25

• A 53 year-old New Britain man was arrested at 8:01 p.m. and charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, drinking while operating a motor vehicle, failure to maintain the proper lane of a multiple lane highway, failure to maintain a reasonable distance apart, and improper use of high beams following a motor vehicle stop for erratic operation of a motor vehicle. The accused agreed to and failed a standardized field sobriety test.

Saturday, Aug. 26 to Thursday, Aug. 31

Friday, Sept. 1

• An attempted burglary was investigated at 89 Turkey Hill Road at 11:14 p.m. The complainant stated that he heard what he thought was a person attempting to gain access to his garage through the overhead bay door. He stated that when he looked out a window he saw two people wearing dark colored clothing run out of the driveway and head east on Turkey Hill Road. There was no property damage or property theft from the residence. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call Trooper Joshua Jackson at 860-399-2100. All calls will be kept confidential.

• A motor vehicle crash was investigated in front of 219 Middlesex Avenue at 8:03 p.m. A 53 year-old Moodus man was operating a 2013 Land Rover Range Rover northbound on Middlesex Avenue when he traveled into the southbound lane and struck a utility pole located on the southbound shoulder. The vehicle continued northward until it became disabled. The driver attempted to walk away from the scene. He was taken into custody and transported to Middlesex Hospital for treatment of minor injuries sustained in the crash. The accident was under investigation at the time the police press report was issued. Anyone with information about this crash is asked to call Trooper Bria at 860-399-2100.

Saturday, Sept. 9

• A 64 year-old Lyme man was arrested at 1:46 p.m. and charged with using a motor vehicle without permission, engaging police in pursuit, and reckless driving. He was also charged with additional charges pertaining to another case.

Sunday, Sept. 10 to Tuesday, Sept. 12
