Police Incident Report for April 26 to May 30


The Valley Courier publishes a Police Incident Report to inform residents of incidents, criminal activities, and police responses occurring in the towns of Essex, Deep River, and Chester. As those charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty, the report does not include names. It may be edited for space and content.

Essex

Wednesday, April 26 to Thursday, April 27

Friday, April 28

No arrests were made.

• A 32 year-old Chester man was issued a misdemeanor summons at 6:15 p.m. for operating a motor vehicle while under license or registration suspension and failure to wear a seat belt in the front seat. He was stopped Main Street westbound in the Centerbrook section of Essex after the investigating officer observed that the operator of a vehicle was not wearing his seat belt. During a routine database check the officer learned that the operator’s license was under suspension.

Saturday, April 29

• A 26 year-old East Lyme man was arrested at 12:17 a.m. and charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, reckless driving, and operating a motor vehicle while under license or registration suspension following a motor vehicle stop on Route 154. He was processed on a $2,500 non-surety bond and was due to appear in Middletown Superior Court on May 9.

Sunday, April 30

No arrests were made.

• A 76 year-old Old Lyme man was issued a citation at 5:02 p.m. for failure to grant right of way at an intersection after the 2007 Cadillac Escalade ESV he was operating at the intersection of Route 153 and the Route 9 exit 3 on-ramp entered the right of way path of a 2014 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium operated by a 43 year-old Clinton woman. No injuries were reported or observed. The Subaru was towed from the scene due to front end damage.

Monday, May 1 to Thursday, May 4

Friday, May 5

No arrests were made.

• A 16 year-old Deep River man was issued a citation at 1:37 p.m. for traveling too fast for conditions after he lost control of the 2002 GMC Yukon he was operating from Ferry Street onto Pratt Street, spun counter clockwise, and struck a parked and unoccupied 2008 Volkswagen Passat. No injuries were reported or observed.

Saturday, May 6 to Sunday, May 14

No arrests were made.

Monday, May 15

• A 23 year-old Deep River man was arrested at 1:22 a.m. and charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs and failure to maintain the proper lane of a multiple lane highway following a motor vehicle stop on Westbrook Road (Route 153). He was processed and released on a $1,000 non-surety bond and issued a May 30 court date in Middletown Superior Court.

Tuesday, May 16 to Wednesday, May 17

No arrests were made.

Thursday, May 18

• A 22 year-old woman of Dogwood Drive in Centerbrook and 24 year-old woman of unrecorded address were arrested at 5:47 p.m. following an investigation into an active physical disturbance. Each party was charged with breach of peace in the second degree and assault in the third degree. Both women sustained minor injuries because of the fight.

Friday, May 19

No arrests were made.

• A 33 year-old Chester woman was issued a citation at 8:59 a.m. for failure to maintain a reasonable distance apart after the 2004 Volkswagen Touareg she was operating southbound on Plains Road struck the rear of a 1999 Lincoln Continental operated by a 33 year-old Norwich woman. The collision occurred near the intersection of Plains Road and Bokum Road. The operator of the struck vehicle complained of neck pain, but refused transport to the hospital. The two passengers onboard the Volkswagen reported no injuries. A dog in the front passenger seat of the Volkswagen received minor injuries and Essex Animal Control responded to the scene to assist with the dog. The Volkswagen was towed from the scene.

Saturday, May 20

No arrests were made.

• A 22 year-old Cromwell man was issued a misdemeanor summons at 8:43 p.m. for reckless driving and failure to maintain the proper lane of a multiple lane highway. Witnesses reported that the accused was speeding prior to a motor vehicle accident involving the 2017 Ford Focus he was operating and a 2017 Honda Odyssey operated by a 44 year-old Newington woman who had three passengers onboard. The operator of the Honda (a juvenile onboard her vehicle) and the at-fault operator were transported to the Middlesex Hospital Shoreline Medical Center in Westbrook for treatment of minor injuries sustained in the crash.

Monday, May 29

No arrests were made.

• A 52 year-old woman of Summit Street in Ivoryton was issued a misdemeanor summons at 6:02 p.m. for evading responsibility in the operation of a motor vehicle and reckless driving. The accused was operating a 2014 Mazda on Maple Avenue when she lost of the vehicle, struck a tree, continued onto Mikes Terrace and struck a second tree. She then fled the scene and was quickly apprehended.

Tuesday, May 30

No arrests were made.

• Police responded to an active burglar alarm at Essex Mart, 90 Plains Road, at 4:39 a.m. A witness observed three males leave the scene in what appeared to be an older model silver Jeep Grand Cherokee. No items appeared to have been taken, but an ATM machine appeared to have been tampered with. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Troop F state police at 860-399-2100. All calls will be kept confidential.

Wednesday, April 26

Thursday, April 27

• An 18 year-old East Haven man was arrested at 10:44 a.m. and charged with assault in the third degree and disorderly conduct after he allegedly punched and kicked another young man at a Kirtland Street location. The assaulted youth was transported to the Middlesex Hospital Shoreline Medical Center in Westbrook for treatment of minor injuries sustained on his face.

Friday, April 28

• A 38 year-old Old Lyme woman was arrested at 3:11 p.m. and charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs and reckless driving following a motor vehicle stop and subsequent failure of a standardized field sobriety test.

Saturday, April 29

No arrests were made.

• A man of unreported age of Plains Road was issued a verbal warning at 3:47 p.m. for failure to maintain the proper lane of a multiple lane highway. The warned driver “stated he was coming back from an out-of-state event, became drowsy after driving all day, and drifted off the road and into the tree,” according to the written police press report of Trooper Paul Pederson. Minor injuries were reported.

Sunday, April 30

• A 21 year-old Windsor Locks man was arrested at 5:14 p.m. and charged with reckless driving and operating a motor vehicle while under license or registration suspension.

Monday, May 1 to Saturday, May 20

No arrests were made.

Sunday, May 21

• A 31 year-old New Britain woman was arrested at 8:56 p.m. and charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs and failure to maintain the proper lane of a multiple lane highway following a motor vehicle stop on River Road. The operator agreed to and failed a standardized field sobriety test. While in custody she was also charged with failure to appear in the second degree on an outstanding warrant. She was processed and released after posting a combined $6,000 surety bond pending court appearance in Middletown Superior Court on June 6.

Saturday, May 27

• A 40 year-old Coventry woman was arrested at 11:45 p.m. and charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs and failure to maintain the proper lane of a multiple lane highway following a motor vehicle stop on Route 80.

• A 29 year-old Waterbury man was issued a citation at 6:19 a.m. for failure to maintain the proper lane of a multiple lane highway after he lost control of the 2013 Hyundai Sonata he was operating and struck a guardrail. No injuries were reported or observed.

Sunday, April 30

No arrests were made.

• A 22 year-old Haddam man was issued a citation at 3:50 p.m. for failure to maintain a reasonable distance apart after the 2003 Jeep Liberty he was operating eastbound Railroad Avenue near Old Depot Road struck the rear of a 2005 Toyota Tacoma operated by a 61 year-old East Hampton man. The operator of the Toyota Tacoma braked hard while traveling in front of the Haddam man, and then left the scene without providing his license, registration, or insurance information to the other driver. The operator of the Toyota Tacoma was later issued a misdemeanor summons for evading responsibility in the operation of a motor vehicle (fleeing the scene of an accident). Minor injuries were reported.

• A 77 year-old Clinton woman was issued a citation at 6:45 p.m. for failure to grant right of way when turning. She was operating a 2013 Nissan Sentra northbound on Middlesex Avenue when the side of her vehicle was struck by a 2008 Harley Davidson motorcycle operated by a 24 year-old Guilford man. A 22 year-old Guilford woman was a passenger onboard the motorcycle. Minor injuries were reported. The collision occurred at the Castle View Drive intersection.

Monday, May 29

No arrests were made.

• A complaint about mail theft was investigated at 48 Railroad Avenue at 10:46 a.m. The complainant reported that he thought a neighbor was intercepting his mail. When the neighbor was questioned at his apartment, there was no indication that the complainant’s mail was being intercepted. However, when police arrived to question the accused they discovered that he was actively smoking marijuana. The questioned man was issued a citation for possession of less than one-half ounce of marijuana and use or possession of drug paraphernalia containing less than one-half ounce of marijuana.

Tuesday, May 30

• A 19 year-old man of Denlar Road was issued a citation at 12:23 a.m. for traveling too fast for conditions after he lost control of the 1997 Volkswagen Jetta GLS he was operating around a curve on Turkey Hill Road near Wig Hill Road and struck a utility pole. No injuries were observed or reported.
