Police Incident Report for April 5 to 25


The Valley Courier publishes a Police Incident Report to inform residents of incidents, criminal activities, and police responses occurring in the towns of Essex, Deep River, and Chester. As those charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty, the report does not include names. It may be edited for space and content.

Essex

Wednesday, April 5

No arrests were made.

• A 24 year-old Chester man was issued a citation at 4:59 a.m. for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart after the 2003 Nissan Altima he was operating westbound on Mares Hill Road at Walnut Street struck the rear of a 2009 BMW 528i operated by a 21 year-old woman of Haddonfield, New Jersey.

Friday, April 7

No arrests were made.

• A 69 year-old Wallingford man was issued a verbal warning at 4:04 p.m. for failure to maintain the proper lane of a multiple lane highway after he fell asleep while operating a 2011 Volvo XC60 and struck a metal-beam guardrail.

Saturday, April 8 to Wednesday, April 19

No arrests were made.

Thursday, April 20

No arrests were made.

• A 35 year-old Middletown man was issued a citation at 11:43 a.m. for failure to drive right after he lost control of the 2015 Mazda he was operating and struck a guardrail. No injuries were reported or observed. The vehicle was driven from the scene.

Friday, April 21

• A 36 year-old Meriden man was arrested at 11:01 p.m. and charged with criminal mischief in the fourth degree, threatening, unlawful restraint in the second degree, two counts of breach of peace in the second degree, and two counts of assault in the third degree. The alleged victims in the case were a 52 year-old man and a 51 year-old man of Main Street in Ivoryton. An unidentified 32 year-old was also listed as an alleged victim. One of the alleged victims was transported to the Middlesex Hospital Shoreline Medical Center in Westbrook for treatment of a head laceration. The accused was processed and held on a combined $13,500 surety bond which he could not post.

• A 32 year-old Westbrook man was issued a citation at 5:17 p.m. for making an unsafe start from a stopped for standing position after he pulled out of a parking lot located at 125 Westbrook Road (while operating a 2016 Honda Accord) and was stuck by a 1998 Ford F150 pick-up truck operated by a 56 year-old Deep River man. The Ford was being operated northbound on Westbrook Road (Route 154). No injuries were reported or observed. Both vehicles were towed due to damage sustained in the crash.

Saturday, April 22

No arrests were made.

Sunday, April 23

• A 25 year-old New London man was arrested at 12:51 a.m. and charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs and failure to maintain the proper lane of a multiple lane highway. The arrest occurred after a 911 cell phone call was made to state police reporting that a gray 2013 Ford Fusion had spun out in the roadway. When troopers arrived at the scene they observed that the operator of the Ford had a strong odor or alcoholic beverage emanating from his breath and that his eyes appeared glossy and bloodshot. Suspecting intoxication, troopers administered a standardized field sobriety test, which the accused consented to and subsequently failed.

Wednesday, April 5 to Friday, April 7

• A two-vehicle accident was investigated on Stevenstown Road at 3:11 a.m. An unidentified driver of a 2007 Subaru Legacy 2 was driving northbound of Stevenstown Road near Witch Hazel Road when he crossed into the southbound lane and collided head-on with a 1997 Ford Taurus operated by a 26 year-old Chester man. The Chester man was transported to Yale New Haven Hospital by Lifestar helicopter for treatment of possible serious injuries. The unidentified operator of the Subaru was transported to Middlesex Hospital Shoreline Medical Center in Westbrook for treatment of minor injuries. There were no witnesses to the crash. The case was under investigation at the time of the police press report.

Sunday, April 9 to Tuesday, April 11

No arrests were made.

Wednesday, April 12

No arrests were made.

• A motor vehicle incident was investigated on Main Street at 10:15 a.m. A 54 year-old Higganum man was operating a 1998 Freightliner FL80 dump truck southbound on Main Street when an object in the rear of the truck struck the driver’s side mirror of a parked 2004 International 4000 truck operated by a 43 year-old Milford man. The accident cracked the mirror. No injuries were reported or observed. No enforcement action was indicated in the police press report.

Thursday, April 13 to Sunday, April 16

Monday, April 17

• A motor vehicle crash was investigated on Main Street at Route 9 at 5:59 p.m. A 69 year-old Higganum man was operating a Harley-Davidson motorcycle southbound on Route 154, when he passed a Ford Explorer operated by a 44 year-old Clinton man, and then suddenly stopped. As a result, the Ford struck the rear of the motorcycle and ejected the motorcycle operator. The motorcycle continued down Route 154 without the operator for approximately 150 feet and struck a parked and unoccupied Jeep Grand Cherokee. The motorcycle operator was transported to the Middlesex Hospital Shoreline Medical Center in Westbrook for treatment of minor injuries sustained in the crash. No enforcement action was indicated in the police press report.

Chester

Wednesday, April 5 to Saturday, April 15

No arrests were made.

Sunday, April 16

• A 19 year-old man of Pleasant Street was arrested at 12:56 p.m. on a warrant charging him with assault in the third degree and disorderly conduct. He turned himself over to police knowing that the warrant had been issued for his arrest. He was processed on a $2,500 bond.

Monday, April 17 to Saturday, April 22

No arrests were made.

Sunday, April 23

• A 40 year-old man and a 38 year-old woman on West Main Street were arrested at 7:45 a.m. Each party was charged with disorderly conduct under the domestic violence act.

• An 86 year-old woman of Goose Hill Road was issued a citation at 4:27 p.m. for failure to maintain the proper lane of a multiple lane highway after she lost control of the 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid she was operating on Route 154 northbound two tenths of a mile south of Castle View drive and struck a tree. No injuries were observed or reported. The Honda was towed from the scene by Oceanside Auto.

Monday, April 24 to Tuesday, April 25
