Tuesday, Jan. 17

• A 23 year-old Higganum man was arrested at 2:34 p.m. on a warrant charging him with driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, reckless driving, evading responsibility in the operation of a motor vehicle (fleeing the scene of an accident), and disobeying the signal of an officer (subsequent offense) following a motor vehicle accident on Route 81 near Pond Meadow Road. The accused was operating a blue Saab with a deflated left front tire (caused by an earlier accident that the operator fled) when stopped by police following a pursuit. The accused refused to stop for activated police lights and siren. The accused increased speed in attempt to evade police, lost control of the Saab, struck a utility pole, and then rolled the vehicle over 360 degrees; the Saab came to rest on its wheels. The accused was unconscious inside the vehicle when approached by the investigating trooper and an EMT who had stopped to help. The unconscious operator, who was the sole occupant, was removed from the vehicle after the investigating trooper and a second EMT determined that there was a risk of fire. The driver’s body was also in a position that indicated possible airway obstruction. Once the driver was outside the vehicle, police observed that he had abdominal distention and a head wound. Lifestar transported the operator to Yale New Haven Hospital. The accident occurred on Sept. 1, 2016 and the warrant arrest was made once the accused was healed enough from his injuries to talk to police. The accused was held at Yale New Haven Hospital until he could be admitted to a rehabilitation facility for his heroin and alcohol addiction.
