Police Incident Report for Aug. 17 to Sept. 6


The Valley Courier publishes a Police Incident Report to inform residents of incidents, criminal activities, and police responses occurring in the towns of Essex, Deep River, and Chester. As those charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty, the report does not include names. It may be edited for space and content.

Essex

Wednesday, Aug. 17

No arrests were made.

• A 21 year-old East Hampton man was issued a citation at 10:35 p.m. for failure to drive right after he lost control of the 2016 Vilt he was operating northbound on Route 154 and drove off the road into a dirt area. He was transported to the Middlesex Hospital Shoreline Medical Center in Westbrook for treatment of minor injuries sustained the crash. He was not wearing a helmet.

Thursday, Aug. 18 to Friday, Aug. 26

No arrests were made.

Saturday, Aug. 27

No arrests were made.

• A 36 year-old Rocky Hill man was issued a misdemeanor summons at 9:31 p.m. for evading responsibility in the operation of a motor vehicle (fleeing the scene of an accident) and making an improper turn. He was operating a 2002 Mercedes northbound on Pratt Street and struck a parked an unoccupied 2012 Mercedes then fled the scene. Witnesses to the crash identified the suspect vehicle, which was located by police a short while later.

Sunday, Aug. 28 to Tuesday, Sept. 6

No arrests were made.

Deep River

Wednesday, Aug. 17 to Friday, Aug. 26

Saturday, Aug. 27

No arrests were made.

• A 49 year-old woman of Village Street was arrested at 11:06 p.m. and charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, making a restricted turn, and failure to obey a stop sign.

Sunday, Aug. 28

No arrests were made.

• A 19 year-old Newington man was issued a citation at 1:32 a.m. for failure to maintain the proper lane of a multiple lane highway after the 2010 Nissan Sentra he was operating struck a wire rope guard rail. No injuries were reported or observed.

Monday, Aug. 29 to Monday, Sept. 5

No arrests were made.

Tuesday, Sept. 6

No arrests were made.

• A 63 year-old Clinton man was issued a citation at 4:21 p.m. for failure to maintain a reasonable distance apart after the vehicle he was operating westbound on Route 80 struck the rear of a vehicle that was stopped to make a left turn into Wades Country Store parking lot. The struck vehicle was pushed into the rear of a second stopped vehicle. The operator and the passenger of the middle vehicle were transported to the Middlesex Hospital Shoreline Clinic in Westbrook for evaluation.

Chester

Wednesday, Aug. 17

No arrests were made.

• A 57 year-old New London woman was issued a citation at 2:40 p.m. for failure to maintain the proper lane of a multiple lane highway and operating a motor vehicle without a driver’s license after she lost control of the 1995 Ford Escort she was operating and struck a write rope guardrail. No injuries were reported or observed among the driver or the two passengers.

Thursday, Aug. 18

No arrests were made.

• A burglary was investigated at 33 High Street at 9:07 p.m. Between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. an individual gained access to the residence by using a spare key found near the door. The occupant of the residence was reported as a 25 year-old male. A Playstation 4 and around $3,200 in cash were reported as stolen. The case was still active at press time.

Friday, Aug. 19 to Monday, Aug. 22

No arrests were made.

Tuesday, Aug. 23

• A 54 year-old man and a 46 year-old woman of the same Castle View Drive residence were arrested at 6:31 p.m. on warrants charging them with cruelty to animals. Chester animal control investigated the alleged abuse of two eight-year-old canines, an akita/chow mix and a vizsla. The dogs appeared emaciated and in need of medical attention. Once the owners willingly released the dogs to police, a veterinarian determined the dogs were infested with fleas. After being treated for four months, the dogs were determined to be in good health and ready for adoption. Each of the accused was processed and released on a $5,000 non-surety bond and were scheduled to appear in Middlesex Superior Court on Sept. 6.

Wednesday, Aug. 24 to Saturday, Sept. 3

Sunday, Sept. 4

No arrests were made.

• A Chester man of unrecorded age or address was issued a citation at 9:34 p.m. for possession of less than one-half ounce of marijuana. In the same incident a juvenile residing in Guilford was issued a citation for driving in violation of passenger restrictions imposed on a 16- or 17 year-old driver, failure to carry a driver’s license, and littering. The juvenile was operating a motor vehicle on West Main Street when a passing officer observed the driver throw a lit object out of the vehicle. A traffic stop was then initiated. The vehicle was towed by Atwood’s Autobody.

• A Deep River man of unrecorded age was issued a misdemeanor summons at 11:32 p.m. for operating a motor vehicle while under license or registration suspension, traveling unreasonably fast, and operating a motor vehicle without a driver’s license after he was caught in a speed trap. The vehicle was driven from the scene by a licensed passenger.

Monday, Sept. 5

• A 30 year-old woman of Baker Road was arrested at 12:05 a.m. and charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs and failure to drive upon the right. She was stopped after police observed that she was driving in the shoulder of West Main Street. She submitted to a standardized field sobriety test, which she failed.

Tuesday, Sept. 6

No arrests were made.

• A 19 year-old Moodus man was issued a citation at 3:06 p.m. for failure to maintain a reasonable distance apart after the 2011 Subaru Outback he was operating northbound on Route 154 stuck the rear of a 2002 Subaru Legacy operated by a 51 year-old Old Saybrook man. No injuries were reported or observed.
