Police Incident Report for June 22 to July 12


The Valley Courier publishes a Police Incident Report to inform residents of incidents, criminal activities, and police responses occurring in the towns of Essex, Deep River, and Chester. As those charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty, the report does not include names. It may be edited for space and content.

Essex

Wednesday, June 22 to Monday, June 27

Tuesday, June 28

No arrests were made.

• A 29 year-old Chester woman was issued a citation at 5:33 p.m. for making an unsafe turn after the 2012 Chevy Captiva she was operating northbound on Route 153 was struck by an oncoming 2004 Ford F150 operated by a 62 year-old man of Grandview Terrace who had the right of way. The cited driver was attempting to turn left onto the Route 9 northbound exit 3 on ramp. The cited driver was transported to Middlesex Hospital Shoreline Medical Center for treatment of a minor laceration sustained in the crash. Both vehicles were towed by Eric’s Autobody.

Tuesday, July 5

• A 21 year-old Deep River woman was arrested at 11:51 p.m. and charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs after she was stopped for speeding (for which she was issued a citation). She exhibited signs of inebriation and failed a standardized field sobriety test.

Thursday, July 7

No arrests were made.

• A 33 year-old Shelton man was issued a written warning at 11:08 a.m. for making an unsafe start from a stopped or standing position after the 2006 Nissan Sentra he was operating impacted the rear of a 2009 Toyota RAV 4 operated by a 66 year-old Deep River woman.

• At 1:46 p.m. police reported that a vehicle was being backed out of a parking stall at the Dunkin Donuts store located at 246 Main Street when it struck a pedestrian who had exited another vehicle. The pedestrian complained of hip pain and was transported to Hartford Hospital by Deep River ambulance personnel. No other injuries were reported or observed. Minor damage occurred to both vehicles, which were driven from the scene. No enforcement action was indicated in the trooper’s report.

• A 25 year-old Durham woman was issued a verbal warning at 3:45 p.m. for failure to secure a load after a sheet of plywood flew off the back of the GMC Yukon she was operating and caused damage to the right side of a Mercedes operated by an 84 year-old Avon man traveling immediately behind. Minor damage occurred to the Mercedes (a scratch to the paint and a broken passenger side mirror). No injuries were reported or observed.

Saturday, June 25

• A 41 year-old East Haven man was arrested at 2:25 p.m. and charged with larceny in the first degree, illegal possession of narcotics, and use or possession of drug paraphernalia following an investigation into the report of a motor vehicle that was stolen from 14 Bates Road. The complainant also reported that a Honda EM 1200 generator was stored in the back of the vehicle when it was taken.

• An 18 year-old Deep River woman was issued a citation at 2:08 p.m. for failure to maintain a reasonable distance apart after the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee she was operating westbound on Route 148 struck the rear of a 2015 Subaru Forester operated by a 60 year-old Westbrook man who had slowed for a vehicle making a left turn into a private driveway. The operator of the struck vehicle was transported to Middlesex Hospital Shoreline Medical Clinic for evaluation of possible injuries sustained in the crash.

Tuesday, June 28

• A 23 year-old New London man was arrested at 1:57 p.m. and charged with possession of narcotics, possession of marijuana, and possession with intent to sell or dispense illegal drugs. He was processed and released after posting a $10,000 surety bond. The accused was in possession of more than a half pound of marijuana as well as cocaine, which was discovered in the vehicle of the accused following a motor vehicle stop for probable cause.

• A 33 year-old Essex man was issued a citation at 5:19 p.m. for failure to maintain a reasonable distance apart after the 2000 Acura Integra he was operating southbound on Route 9 struck the rear of a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee operated by a 70 year-old Essex man. The cited driver was allegedly operating erratically from lane to lane when he struck the rear of the Jeep, causing both vehicles to flip over. The cited operator was transported to Middlesex Hospital for evaluation of possible injuries sustained in the crash. No other injuries were reported at the scene. Both vehicles were towed.

Sunday, July 3

• A 28 year-old New Britain woman was arrested at 10:01 p.m. and charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, operating an unregistered motor vehicle, and failure to maintain the proper lane of a multiple lane highway. The accused was stopped for driving erratically and then failed a standardized field sobriety test. She was processed and released on a $1,000 non-surety bond.

• A 25 year-old Waterford woman was issued a misdemeanor summons at 10:13 p.m. for reckless driving, operating a motor vehicle while under license or registration suspension, operation a motor vehicle without insurance, and failure to drive right following a motor vehicle accident on Middlesex Avenue. She was operating a 1996 Buick Regal northbound on Saybrook Road when she lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a curve, left the roadway, and struck a utility pole. The operator sustained non-life threatening injuries and was transported by Chester Ambulance to Hartford Hospital.
