Police Incident Report for March 30 to April 19


The Valley Courier publishes a Police Incident Report to inform residents of incidents, criminal activities, and police responses occurring in the towns of Essex, Deep River, and Chester. As those charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty, the report does not include names. It may be edited for space and content.

Essex

Wednesday, March 30

No arrests were made.

Thursday, March 31

No arrests were made.

• At 2:25 p.m. police reported that a 77 year-old woman of Champlin Square was operating a 2014 Mercury E3504 eastbound on West Avenue when an overhead steel cable broke due to high winds and struck and broke the windshield on her vehicle. Essex Public Works responded to the scene and removed the cable. No injuries were observed or reported at the scene.

Friday, April 1

No arrests were made.

• At 8:50 a.m. police reported that during the overnight hours unknown parties entered a building belonging to Carpenter Landscaping, 46 Plains Road, and stole a 2015 Integrity enclosed utility trailer that contained a 2015 Ski-Doo snowmobile. A probable suspect was observed operating an older model Ford F-150 pick-up truck, colored red, with an extended cab. The case was still under investigation at press time.

Sunday, April 3

• A 24 year-old Niantic man was arrested at 10:17 p.m. on a warrant charging him with larceny in the third degree, reckless driving, disobeying the signal of an officer, engaging police in pursuit, operating a motor vehicle while under license or registration suspension, failure to drive right, using a motor vehicle without permission, and criminal trover damage to a motor vehicle in the second degree. The arrest stemmed from an incident in which police were engaged in pursuit of a driver who failed to stop at police order. The driver took the vehicle without permission, eluded police, crashed a short distance away, and abandoned the vehicle. A registration plate left behind at the scene of the crash allowed troopers to identify the vehicle’s owner and the driver. The vehicle was a 1991 Acura Legend owned by a 61 year-old Old Lyme man.

• A 55 year-old man of Windemere Way in Ivoryton was issued a citation at 6:49 p.m. for operating a motor vehicle without a driver’s license and failure to maintain the proper lane of a multiple lane highway. He was operating a 2015 Subaru Outback northbound on Route 153 near Mares Hill Road when he drifted into the southbound lane and struck a 2001 Nissan Pathfinder operated by a 32 year-old Chester man. Minor injuries were reported at the scene.

Monday, April 4

No arrests were made.

• At 9:52 a.m. police reported that a 63 year-old Chester woman was operating a 2003 Ford Taurus when she lost control of the vehicle in bad weather conditions and struck a wire rope guardrail. No injuries were reported or observed and no charges were indicated in the police report.

• A 47 year-old Windsor man was issued a written warning at 7:43 a.m. for failure to maintain the proper lane of a multiple lane highway after he lost control of the 2009 Honda Accord he was operating and struck a 2006 Honda Civic operated by a 27 year-old Deep River man. No injuries were reported or observed at the scene.

• A 74 year-old man of Riveredge in Ivoryton was issued a written warning at 12:20 p.m. for unsafe backing after the 1999 Chevy Tahoe he was operating collided with a 2014 Subaru Outback operated by a 67 year-old woman of Bittersweet Lane. The collision occurred at the intersection of West Hills Road and Mitchell Terrace.

• A 45 year-old Chester man was issued a citation at 8:01 a.m. for unsafe movement of a motor vehicle from a stopped or standing position after the 2005 Pontiac Vibe he was operating collided with two other vehicles.

Deep River

Wednesday, March 30

• A 46 year-old man of Stevenstown Road was arrested at 6:41 p.m. and charged with criminal mischief in the third degree and disorderly conduct following a domestic incident. The accused yelled and screamed profanities at the alleged victim. He then allegedly punched a hole in the wall. He was processed on a $2,000 bond.

• At 9:16 a.m. police reported that a 34 year-old Old Saybrook woman was operating a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee when she lost control of the vehicle and rolled the vehicle over. She refused medical attention at the scene. No charges were noted in the police report.

• A 74 year-old man of Hyde Park, New York was issued a warning at 4:33 p.m. for failure to grant right of way after th2009 Subaru Forester he was operating from the Adams Supermarket parking lot onto southbound Essex Street collided with a 2013 Lexus RX 450H operated by a 73 year-old man of Meadow Wood Road.

Thursday, April 14

• A 21 year-old man of Winthrop Road was arrested at 7:43 p.m. and charged with interfering with an officer, use or possession of drug paraphernalia, passing in a no-passing zone, and traveling unreasonably fast. The accused was operating a red 1999 Honda Prelude bearing Connecticut registration plate AB93524 when he was stopped on Route 145 near Route 80 for speeding and illegal passing. The investigating trooper detected the odor of marijuana and asked the accused to step out of the vehicle. The accused became non-compliant and resisted the trooper’s attempts to check his person for weapons. The accused became physically aggressive, was warned to stop resisting, and was threatened with Tasing or being sprayed with OC (commonly referred to as pepper spray). The accused continued to resist and attempted to flee the scene; the trooper Tased him. The accused was transported to the Middlesex Hospital Shoreline Medical Clinic to have the Taser probes removed. The accused had no other injuries other than those caused by the Taser probes.

• A 43 year-old woman of Westbrook Road was arrested at 10:41 p.m. on a warrant charging her with disorderly conduct, interfering with an officer, and two counts of assault on a public safety officer. She was processed on a $5,000 bond.

Friday, April 15

• A 25 year-old man of Prospect Street was arrested at 1:35 a.m. and charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, failure to maintain the proper lane of a multiple lane highway, and operating a motor vehicle in violation of license classification.

• A 47 year-old man of Union Street was arrested at 7:20 p.m. and charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, operating a motor vehicle while under license or registration suspension, and failure to obey a stop sign. He was processed and released on a $1,000 on-surety bond and issued an April 26 court date.

Chester

Wednesday, March 30

• At 11:19 a.m. troopers responded to a 911 call regarding a robbery at First Niagara Bank, 9 Water Street. Troopers detained two men at the bank. An onsite investigation revealed that no robbery took place. One man “walked into the bank and conducted himself in a manner that caused suspicion and fear among the bank employees,” State Trooper Matthew Ewing stated in a written report. The disruptive man and his companion were released from the scene and no action was taken against them.

• At 2 p.m. police reported that a 25 year-old man of Indian Creek Drive was operating a 2010 BMW 5100 motorcycle westbound on Route 148 when he lost control of the vehicle and collided with the road surface, then slid and struck a guardrail on the south shoulder. The operator was transported to the hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. No enforcement action was noted in the police report.

• A 54 year-old man of Pleasant Street was issued a written warning at 9:55 a.m. for failure to drive right after he lost control of the 2001 Volvo V70 and struck a utility pole in front of Camp Hazen. No injuries were reported or observed at the scene.

• A 17 year-old girl of Goose Hill Road was issued a citation at 5:26 p.m. for traveling too fast for conditions after she lost control of the 2010 Honda Pilot she was operating eastbound on Baker Road and struck a utility pole. No injuries were reported or observed at the scene.

• At 2:24 p.m. police reported that a 37 year-old Deep River man was operating a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee when he lost control of the vehicle and struck a wire rope guardrail. He refused medical attention at the scene. No enforcement action was noted in the police report.

• At 2:47 p.m. police reported that a 29 year-old Middletown woman was operating a 2004 Volkswagen Passat when she lost control of the vehicle and slide sideways into a ravine. She refused medical attention at the scene. Her father, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was transported to an area hospital for evaluation. No charges were noted in the police report.

Saturday, April 9

• A 20 year-old Deep River man was arrested at 1:46 p.m. and charged with illegal possession of a controlled substance and operating a vehicle without a proper load cover following a motor vehicle stop on Route 154 at Railroad Avenue.

• A 37 year-old man Stafford Springs man was issued a misdemeanor summons at 1:29 p.m. for operating a motor vehicle while under license or registration suspension and reckless driving.

Saturday, April 16

No arrests were made.

• A 36 year-old East Haddam woman was issued a verbal warning at 12:28 p.m. for unsafe movement from a stopped or standing position after the 2015 Ford Explorer she was operating collided with a 2010 Toyota Camry operated by a 26 year-old Manchester man. No injuries were reported or observed.

• Criminal mischief was investigated at 19 Hickory Hill Drive at 1:54 p.m. The complainant reported that the windshield and hood of his minivan was damaged. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Trooper Matthew Ewing at the Chester Resident State Trooper’s Office at 860-526-3605.

• A 26 year-old Danbury man was issued a misdemeanor summons at 5:15 p.m. for operating a motor vehicle while under license or registration suspension and speeding.

Monday, April 18

• A 27 year-old man of Goose Hill Road was arrested at 1:01 p.m. and charged with burglary in the third degree and larceny in the third degree. He was processed on a $1,000 surety bond.

Tuesday, April 19
