Police Incident Report March 9 to 22


The Valley Courier publishes a Police Incident Report to inform residents of incidents, criminal activities, and police responses occurring in the towns of Essex, Deep River, and Chester. As those charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty, the report does not include names. It may be edited for space and content.

Essex

Wednesday, March 9

No arrests were made.

Thursday, March 10

• A 46 year-old Waterbury woman was arrested at 2:40 a.m. and charged with operating a motor vehicle while under license or registration suspension and failure to maintain the proper lane of a multiple lane highway. She was also charged with failure to appear in the second degree on an active arrest warrant out of Bridgeport Superior Court. She was processed an released after posting a combined $3,000 surety bond and issued a March 21 court date at Bridgeport Superior Court and a March 22 court date at Middletown Superior Court.

• A 25 year-old Westbrook woman was issued a written warning for failure to maintain a reasonable distance apart after the 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee she was operating near the Route 9 exit 3 southbound on-ramp struck the rear of a 2014 Acura MDX operated by a 46 year-old New Hartford woman. The New Hartford woman was stopped at a stop sign waiting for traffic ahead to clear. No injuries were reported at the scene as a result of the crash.

• A 34 year-old Old Saybrook man was issued a written warning at 7:44 p.m. for failure to grant right of way to on-coming traffic after the 2006 Toyota Corolla he was operating southbound on Westbrook Road was struck by a 2007 Subaru Forester operated by a 65 year-old Glastonbury woman. The crash occurred at the intersection of Bokum and Westbrook Roads.

Wednesday, March 9

• A 53 year-old woman of Hemlock Drive was issued a verbal warning at 4:58 p.m. for unsafe backing after the 2005 Toyota Sienna she was backing out of a residential driveway on Prospect Hill Road collided with a parked and unoccupied 2015 Nissan Sentra owned by a 61 year-old woman.

Thursday, March 10

No arrests were made.

• An 86 year-old woman of Prospect Hill Road was issued a verbal warning at 1:26 p.m. for making an unsafe movement from a stopped or standing position after the 2002 Subaru Legacy she was operating out of the Cumberland Farms parking lot struck the side of a 2007 Kia Rondo/LX operated by a 39 year-old woman of Jewett City. The warned driver stated that she thought the light had changed in her favor. No injuries were reported and both vehicles were driven from the scene.

Saturday, March 19

• A 16 year-old was arrested at 9:35 a.m. and charged with reckless driving (exceeding 85 miles per hour). The youth was processed on a $1,000 non-surety bond and issued a March 29 court date at Middletown Superior Court.

Wednesday, March 9 - Friday, March 11

• A 28 year-old Southington man was issued a citation at 5:59 a.m. for failure to maintain the proper lane of a multiple lane highway after he swerved to avoid a deer in the roadway while operating a 1996 Pontiac Sunfire and struck a wire rope guardrail. The driver stated that he was not injured and refused medical attention.

Sunday, March 13

No arrests were made.

• At 4:03 a.m. police reported that Paul Josiah Brock, 20, of 1706 Boston Post Road in Westbrook suffered fatal injuries after he was unable to stop the 2004 Saturn Ion he was operating northbound on Route 145 at a stop sign at the intersection of Route 148 and struck a tree and brush. Brock, the lone occupant of the vehicle, was trapped inside and required extrication by fire personnel. Brock was presumed deceased at the scene. Witnesses to the crash (or anyone with information about Brock) are asked to call Trooper Brendan Fennessy at 860-399-2100. All calls will be kept confidential.

Monday, March 14

No arrests were made.

• A 41 year-old woman of Westerly, Rhode Island was issued a citation at 11:33 a.m. for failure to maintain the proper lane of a multiple lane highway after she lost control of the 2014 Toyota she was operating and collided with a metal beam guardrail located off the right shoulder. The driver sustained no injuries in the crash.

• Following an emergency call to police from a resident on Bates Road at 3:04 p.m. regarding an extremely intoxicated person with altered mental state, a committal was made. The subject was suicidal and became “very combative and had to be restrained prior or entering the ambulance,” the police report stated. Chester Ambulance transported the subject to Middlesex Hospital for an emergency committal and evaluation.

Wednesday, March 16

• A 43 year-old Haddam woman was arrested at 11:50 a.m. and charged with larceny in the third degree, illegal use of a credit card, and receipt of goods or services via illegal use of a credit card.

• A burglary was investigated on Good Hill Road at 1:01 p.m. Several items were taken from a shed. They included: a Honda generator, an Echo back-pack blower, a Stihl 20” chainsaw, and a Stihl power pruner with extension and a chainsaw head. A witness observed four males entering and leaving the shed, each carrying one of the stolen items. All four men got into a dark grey Toyota 4x4 pickup truck. The truck was last seen traveling westbound on Liberty Street. Police developed a suspect in the case and an arrest was expected soon. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call Trooper Matthew Ewing at 860-526-3605. All calls will be kept confidential.

Saturday, March 19

No arrests were made.

• An 18 year-old Deep River man was issued a citation at 4:30 p.m. for failure to maintain the proper lane of a multiple lane highway after drove through a Y intersection on Maple Street southbound at Straits Road while operating a 1990 Mazda MX-5 and collided with a wire rope guard rail. The cited operator reported minor injuries but refused medical attention at the scene. The vehicle was towed from the scene by Mal’s Auto and Truck.

Sunday, March 20

• A 25 year-old Middletown man was arrested at 12:22 a.m. and charged with operating a motor vehicle while under license or registration suspension, failure to renew registration, operating a motor vehicle without insurance, and failure to maintain the proper lane of a multiple lane highway following a motor vehicle stop.

Monday, March 21 — Tuesday, March 22
