05/23/2023 01:39 PMLike many high school kids, Davis Walker is fascinated by cars. Unlike many high school kids, Davis is turning that fascination into charity by organizing a car show on Sunday, May 28, with proceeds going to the Valley Shore Animal Welfare League.
Back in January, Davis was sitting in his AP government and politics class when his teacher reminded the students that in addition to the AP exams at the end of the year, students also needed to complete a project.
“He mentioned a student had done a fundraiser one year, and that got me thinking,” Davis says.
When Davis started thinking of what kind of fundraiser he’d like to do, he kept coming back to one of his core interests: cars.
“Basically, I’ve always really warned to host my own car show someday,” Davis says.
Well, Davis will get his wish on Sunday, May 28 as he hosts a car show from noon to 2 p.m. at The Morgan School. The car show is free for spectators, and those who wish to participate must pay $5 to showcase their cars. The proceeds of the show will benefit the Valley Shore Animal Welfare League. The league is a nonprofit organization that owns and operates a no-kill shelter that serves as an adoption facility for dogs and cats and has a special connection to Davis.
“About eight years ago, we got our dog from there, and I thought it would be a good place to give back to,” Davis explains.
Davis says the car show is an opportunity for people to bring their cars and interact with other car owners as well as for spectators to walk around, look at the cars, and talk to the owners.
“I spread the word at a car show in Guilford and on some different social media groups. A lot of people said they would bring their car, so I’m hoping we’ll see a lot of cars there,” Davis says.
Davis is still looking for new participants in the car show. More information can be found on the Instagram page morgancarshow (all one word and all lowercase) as well as in the Shoreline Auto Shows Facebook page.
“There’s a registration page on there for people to fill out, but people can also just bring their cars day of and pay there,” Davis says.
Davis explains his interest in cars very simply.
“I just really like cars. They’re cool,” he says with a laugh.
Davis says he’s been going to car shows for a while, so when his teacher approved his project, he was ready to get the ball rolling.
“I started thinking about it back in January, but I got everything organized pretty recently,” Davis says.
For Davis, one of the best parts of organizing the show was seeing how eager people were to help with the show — whether that was teachers who agreed to help spread the word or let him print out posters or administrators who gave permission for the parking lot to be used for the show.
“Just getting responses from people — that’s been very cool. At first, I was pretty nervous, but people seemed happy to help or say that they’re coming, so that’s been cool,” Davis says of his favorite part.
Davis is a junior at The Morgan School and has grown up in Clinton. In his spare time, he can be found swimming, going to car shows, and being a member of a robotics team in Guilford.
With his interest in cars and robotics, Davis says he would like to put that interest to use in the future.
“When I go to college, I want to study engineering,” he says.
As someone who grew up in Clinton, Davis says his favorite aspect of the town is how supportive the community is.
“My favorite part is the community aspect, especially at my school. It’s a very inclusive and supportive environment,” Davis says.
