06/25/2020 12:00 AMThe Morgan baseball team went on a late-season surge to make the Class S State Tournament in 2019, and one of the biggest reasons behind the Huskies’ turnaround was the performance of Kyle Suraci. Kyle had a solid season for Morgan as a junior and was then named one of the team’s senior captains for this year.
Kyle played both second base and shortstop for the Huskies. He provided plenty of power and stole his fair share of bases, while batting in the middle of the lineup. Kyle has always enjoyed playing baseball alongside his cohorts in Clinton.
“I’ve been playing baseball for about 14 years, and I played just about every sport when I was a kid, but baseball is the one sport that really stuck with me,” says Kyle. “My favorite aspect is the connections with my teammates, who I now consider some of my best friends.”
Morgan got out to a tough start by dropping seven of its first eight games last spring, but responded by winning eight of its next 12 to qualify for states. The Huskies punched their state tourney ticket with a 6-4 victory versus Shoreline Conference rival Portland in the home stretch of the regular season.
“My favorite moment from last season was winning the game that put us into the State Tournament,” Kyle says. “We weren’t expected to do as well as we did after a slow start, but we got the hang of it after a few games, and I was really happy about it.”
Huskies’ Head Coach Michael Grant commends Kyle for his work ethic on the diamond. Grant says that Kyle has a knack for delivering in big situations.
“Kyle worked very hard at his skills as a baseball player. Hopefully, he takes that work ethic with him to college, and he will have a successful college career,” says Grant. “Kyle was a guy that hit with some power, stole bases for us, and was very good defensively, as well.”
After starting varsity for all four years at Morgan, Kyle is ready to take his game to the collegiate ranks. Last summer, Kyle committed to play baseball at the Division III level for Bridgewater State University in Massachusetts.
“I want to keep improving everything within my game to become the best version of myself I can be,” says Kyle. “Coach Grant helped me improve a lot. He was always good with me and all the guys and valued our opinions. With the 2020 season being canceled, I was only able to play for him for two years, but enjoyed the time we had.”
Kyle had high expectations for the Huskies coming into 2020. Morgan was returning several quality players who were determined to take the team back to states. Kyle and fellow senior Mike Zingarella were going to play second base and shortstop, respectively, and both athletes were penciled in as two of the club’s biggest contributors.
“It’s disappointing that we weren’t able to get any games in this year, but I’m still really thankful for the opportunity to go out and finish my career with this team on a high note,” Kyle says. “We started off last year poorly and finished strong. That’s how I will remember my time with this team. We never quit.”
In addition to baseball, Kyle enjoys spending time with family and friends, working out, fishing, hiking, and swimming. When he isn’t competing for Morgan, Kyle plays on the Connecticut Heat travel baseball team in order to keep his skills sharp. Kyle is excited for the chance to display those skills on the college ballfield next year.
“I do not play any other organized sports, but play pretty much everything throughout the offseason to stay in shape,” says Kyle. “I’m really looking forward to the opportunity to play at the next level.”
