It took Kyle Carse a little time to take a liking to wrestling. Kyle tried it out for a few months by participating in a youth program at Morgan, but didn’t really get into the sport until two of his friends persuaded him to join the high school team. Now, Kyle is a junior who’s having a great campaign for the Huskies’ wrestling squad.

“Louis Bradley and Dave Fortuna are two of my closest friends, and they both got me to do it. I started to like it more and more once I got into the rhythm of things,” says Kyle. “Those two really made it enjoyable for me, and that’s when I started to wrestle more in the offseason, as well.”

Kyle wrestles in the 106-pound weight class for Morgan. He’s been one of the team’s top competitors this season, sporting a record of 27-5 on the campaign. Unfortunately, Kyle recently reinjured the right elbow that he had broken during a meet last year. While Kyle is disappointed, he’s hoping that he can return for the Class S State Championship.

“The most important thing is making sure that I don’t hurt it even more,” Kyle says. “I’m not in a lot of pain right now, but it’s when I try to extend it that it hurts.”

Huskies’ Head Coach Darren Hicks describes Kyle as a soft-spoken athlete, but also one of the hardest-working wrestlers on Morgan’s roster.

“A lot of people underestimate Kyle, because he’s on the quieter side,” says Hicks. “He appears very calm in all of his matches, but when he attacks, he’s incredibly strong and quick.”

Kyle helped Morgan finish with a record of 12-7 during the regular season. The Huskies also posted a mark of 5-1 in SCC Division 2 to finish in a tie with Notre Dame-West Haven and Fairfield Prep for first place in the standings.

Coach Hicks appreciates the impact that Kyle has had on the Huskies’ success. He’s also pleased to see Kyle continue making an impact at practice despite being sidelined.

“It’s a really unfortunate time for Kyle to get an injury, especially given how well he has been wrestling this year,” Hicks says. “He’s still helping coach the younger guys at practice, and I’m hoping that he’s able to make it back in time for the State Tournament.”

Kyle has dramatically improved his skills on the mat since joining Morgan as a freshman. Kyle credits the MarcAurele Wrestling offseason program with helping him get into better shape and becoming better prepared for his matches.

“It’s a great wrestling club. There’s a lot of talented wrestlers there. They’ve been able to push me to get better,” Kyle says. “Also, just learning from my mistakes. Mistakes really aren’t as high during offseason matches, so if I make one, I’m able to learn and move forward from it. It’s just been really beneficial to my success.”

Outside of wrestling, Kyle enjoys school and wants to study marine engineering after he graduates from Morgan.

“I’d like to get into a maritime school, so I can focus on marine engineering,” says Kyle. “That really interests me, but I’ve still got a little time left before I have to decide where I’m going for college.”
