Regan’s Fast to the Finish Line

Seth Regan stood out as a speedster when he played sports as a youngster. Seth decided to parlay that skill into a career on the track and has since progressed into a stellar sprinter at Haddam-Killingworth.

Seth played soccer, basketball, and baseball while growing up, using his speed to his advantage in all three sports. When he learned about the legacy of the H-K track program, Seth signed up for the indoor team and then joined the outdoor squad during the spring.

As a junior this year, Seth helped the Cougars’ indoor track team capture the Shoreline Conference title and then contributed to the outdoor squad’s first conference crown since 2013. Seth turned in a big performance at the Shoreline Conference Championship by finishing second in the 200-meter dash and placing third in the 100-meter dash for H-K. He went to take third place in the 200 at the Class M State Championship.

“In a lot of the teams I played on, I was seen as the fastest guy, and I just grew to have a passion for track,” says Seth. “I keep motivating myself to keep going through the miles and workouts. With track, you have to motivate yourself. It makes it easier.”

Seth likes going all-out in both of his sprinting events, but he likes the additional element that comes with running the 200.

“My favorite event is the 200. It’s not too short, so there is a little bit of thinking to it, and you have to pace yourself,” Seth says. “With the 200, I start on a curve and stagger my start. I look at the person to my right, and then try to pass them, and then pass the next person.”

Seth knew that H-K needed a total team effort to reign supreme in the Shoreline after losing so many key people to graduation. The Cougars got exactly what they wanted and rode their depth to the league title.

“Winning Shorelines was something unexpected, because we lost a great group of distance runners,” says Seth. “But at Shorelines, we scored so many points with three to four kids in a lot of events, so we showed we had depth.”

Seth realized that he needed more than just raw speed in order to succeed as a sprinter. Boys’ outdoor track Head Coach Matt Diglio says that Seth has put in plenty of extra work in order to hone his craft in the fast lane.

“Seth spends his offseason working out with a personal trainer, and all of that extra training and work has paid off in recent years,” Diglio says. “Seth is not only the top sprinter on our team, but one of the top sprinters in the Shoreline.”

Looking ahead to his senior year, Seth wants to help the Cougars continue their Shoreline streak, while etching his name in the H-K history books.

“Hopefully, next year, we just keep winning Shorelines as a team,” says Seth. “For me, I hope to break the 100, 200, and sprint medley relay records for the school.”
