Trevor Angelo played football and basketball at East Haven High School, but after graduating in 2016, he missed being part of a team. When Anthony Aceto asked Trevor to help out with coaching East Haven’s 3rd-grade Youth Football squad, Trevor jumped at the opportunity to bring that aspect back into his life.

“[Aceto] coached us in high school, and one day he shot me a call and asked if I wanted to come down and coach. I said definitely since football is my favorite sport,” says Trevor. “As we started getting to know the kids, it became something I really enjoyed. I’m thankful he let me coach with him, and I’m hoping we can coach them all the way through 8th grade. I’m happy he gave me a call, and I’m definitely grateful for that.”

As a football player with the Yellowjackets, Trevor was penciled in as the team’s staring quarterback for three seasons. Although he dealt with some injuries along the way, Trevor was solid in the QB role during his sophomore, junior, and senior years. In his senior season, Trevor led East Haven to a 7-3 record in Head Coach Melvin Wells’s first campaign at the helm.

“Football was a great experience. The coaches I had were all great to work with. The players, we were a great group of friends who had good chemistry. We had a good time just being with each other,” Trevor says. “We didn’t win much, but it was a good atmosphere. We had that 7-3 season at the end, so it was great to see all our hard work pay off at the end.”

Trevor was a quarterback from the time he first stepped on the football field. He loved playing the position growing up, while making an impact both through the air and on the ground. Trevor gives his teammates a lot of credit for their success.

“I feel each year I progressed. Because of my coaches, I learned more and more every year,” says Trevor. “My offensive line was great. As they progressed, they gave me more time to throw and helped me run the ball. Also, having a receiver like Mike Griffith was great. He’s such an athletic guy and made my job a lot easier.”

Trevor’s experience as a quarterback has proved vital in his transition from a player to a coach. Trevor understands the responsibilities of players all around the field, and that allows him to help out everyone. Trevor also appreciates the support he receives from his coaching colleagues.

“This is my first time coaching anything, but being a quarterback, I knew a lot of the positions and what they’re supposed to be doing. You know what they’re doing wrong, what they’re doing right, and you pick up on the little things,” says Trevor, who is also a head coach in East Haven’s Biddy Basketball program. “I think it has been an easy transition, especially because [Aceto and fellow coach John Kikosicki] are both knowledgeable. Working with them has made this easier.”

Trevor has a great passion for athletics and is happy that he has a chance to use sports as a way to give back to his community. Trevor loves passing on what he’s learned from his experience to the next generation of East Haven athletes.

“I love sports. I like still being connected with the sports, even though I’m not playing anymore. I get to teach the kids what I learned and I get to learn more about the actual sports myself, so that’s definitely something I look forward to and enjoy doing,” says Trevor. “Being able to teach people the sports I love and learn more about them is great.”
