Georgia Nye has strived to perfect the outside hitter’s position throughout the second half of her career with the Morgan volleyball squad. In her final year with the Huskies this fall, Georgia’s commitment to excellence resulted in a spike in both her skills and kills on the court.

Georgia started playing volleyball after a attending a clinic run by then-Morgan Head Coach Joe Grippo in her freshman year. After stepping into the outside hitter slot when Paige Trusty took the helm last season, Georgia has amassed 192 kills with 55 digs, 51 aces, and 24 blocks as a senior captain for the Huskies this year.

“My teammates have helped me a lot, and we had a better year than we did last year. We’re all working together on the court,” says Georgia, who also does indoor track and lacrosse at Morgan. “Coach Trusty is also a great asset to this team. She helped with the transition from one coach to another and has helped me with playing outside hitter.”

Georgia attributes much of her offensive production to the effort she put in during the offseason, along with the fact that she clicked with Morgan’s new setter. Georgia says that all the Huskies share the same mentality of going hard after each point.

“During the offseason, I went to the weight room, so working really hard helped me there. We have a new setter this year, Sarah Kuever, and she’s helped a lot with getting kills,” Georgia says. “As teammates, we’re all on good terms with each other, and we’re working on the same page with our mindset of being aggressive with every point.”

While she’s risen through the ranks by progressing from a substitute to a starter, Georgia also feels grateful that she was selected to lead Morgan as one of the club’s captains in her senior season.

“It has been great being captain. We all come together both on and off the court to make the team stronger, and we have no drama. I’m proud to be the leader of this team,” says Georgia. “My freshman year, Coach Grippo would sub me in, and then I went to the weak side as a hitter in playing JV and varsity my sophomore year. I’ve been working on the outside hitting position, and I’ve grown to love it. My serving and hitting have improved, too.”

Coach Trusty says that Georgia is the perfect person for the Huskies to emulate, because she brings the right balance of tenacity and levity to the floor.

“Georgia has the ability to relate to each and every teammate. She is incredible friendly and kind, making her very approachable to the younger players,” Trusty says. “Georgia has a very fun, outgoing personality, but she is also dedicated and focused while on the court. You can see her desire to win from the sidelines. Her ability to balance having fun and compete makes her a great role model for our team.”

Georgia has learned a lot of valuable lessons as a result of playing sports at Morgan. One of the biggest things she’s discovered is the importance of mind over matter when it comes to accomplishing tasks—whether it’s on the court or in the classroom.

“Morgan volleyball has had a tremendous impact on me. With sports, you learn the importance of leadership and working hard,” says Georgia. “I learned a lot about mentality and applying it to the court. Volleyball has been a huge part of my high school career.”
