After working in the Town of North Haven Finance Office for 27 years, Rose Tryanow has decided to retire.

“I want to be able to leave healthy and before I’m too old to do anything,” Rose says.

Rose has been involved in finance throughout her professional career. She started in banking for about 12 years, working her way up to branch manager before she stepped away to start her family.

“I stayed home, started my family, and then I was bored so I decided to work for Stop & Shop in the evenings,” Rose says, “I went into the cash office there, so I was again in finance.”

Eventually, she moved to full-time at the store, dealing with personnel and payroll. Around that time, she saw an ad in the paper for the Town of North Haven.

“I stopped by, applied, and the rest was history,” Rose says.

Rose started with the town in February 1990, initially hired as a bookkeeper and handling payroll and personnel files. Later on, Rose says that the town was getting more and more pensioners, and the director of finance at the time wanted to expand her role.

“That’s when I became a supervisor of payroll, personnel, and all the pensioners,” Rose says.

Her official title now is assistant office manager-staff personnel specialist.

While Rose has enjoyed her time with the town, the job did come with some challenges. Rose says she remembers when she used to do the job alone and would have to stay late on weekdays, and would even have to come in Saturdays to get work done on certain occasions.

“There’s a lot of reporting, a lot of paperwork involved, and certain times of the year, you just don’t have enough time to do it all,” Rose says.

She says that the busiest times of the year included the beginning and ending of the fiscal year, but she loved the challenges of the positions she held, and says she always received support when she wanted to move forward and try something new.

“My boss always supported me, whoever it was at the time, and I loved the challenges,” Rose says.

Rose likes to work with people, so it should come as no surprise that it’s the people that she will miss the most. She says she will miss the employees, retirees, and even the vendors she deals with.

When “I get a phone call from...retirees, I really enjoy talking to them, because most of them I worked with,” says Rose, “And all the employees, whenever they called and they had a problem, I enjoyed working with them. I really did.”

The work and dedication has not gone unnoticed. There will be a retirement party in honor of Rose on Thursday, June 22 at Eli’s on Whitney in Hamden. Rose says she is excited and very grateful about the event, and would like to thank her co-workers for organizing it.

“It’s wonderful what they’re doing, and I really appreciate it,” Rose says.

Friday, June 30 will be Rose’s last day at the office, and she already has some plans in place for when she retires. She wants to spend time helping watch her five grandchildren during the week, and even has some travel plans in place.

“Keeping myself busy is the main thing, and I will,” Rose says, “With the kids, I will be kept busy.”

When the grandchildren aren’t keeping her busy, Rose says the rest of the days will be for her. She says she has some friends who are retired and would enjoy bike rides and time at the beach. She even has a cottage in East Haven that she plans on using more often, and says she could see herself doing some volunteer work.

With her last day approaching, Rose says it’s hard to believe and doesn’t feel real right now.

“I guess I’ll feel it on June 30th,” she says with a laugh.

Rose said she learned a lot during her time with the town, and said she will be around in case anyone needs help.

“As I told Mr. Freda, I’m around, don’t worry about it,” she says.

Anyone interested in attending Rose’s retirement party can contact Nancy, Ellen, or Josephine at 203-239-5321 ext. 650 by Monday, June 5.
