Former HK Cheer Coach Withington Excited for Guilford Coaching Slot

After spending time as a cheerleading coach with Haddam-Killingworth, Killingworth resident Mary Withington is now the new head coach of the Guilford cheer squad.

Mary Withington is about giving athletes opportunities when it comes to coaching, and she is hoping the latest one afforded to her leads to an even better future for Guilford.

The Killingworth resident and former post-secondary school instructor spent over three years in California before returning to both Connecticut and teaching and prior to becoming a cheerleading coach with Haddam-Killingworth. But now the West Haven native begins a new cheer coaching chapter as the head coach for Guilford.

"Guilford was looking for a coach and I had the opportunity to coach here, and I'm delighted to take on the role here," says Mary. "The team is transitioning, but they are willing to work hard and be dedicated. I support hard work and team spirit, as that's the mission of the program. I want to try to instill tradition, honor, and commitment. I also want them to be ready to challenge themselves and bring personal bests to each practice. I never see coaching as a job; I will be a coach that gives chances and will be committed to the program."

Mary loves the fact someone in her position can help young adults mature both athletically and emotionally-something that she sees her squad already doing before it has even hit the sidelines for its first performance.

"I can see their confidence levels going up and becoming more extroverted," Mary says. "It's very rewarding and there's nothing better than seeing them also improve and reach their goals. I videotape their routines so I can see their progression. I also don't let them use the phrase, 'I can't.'"

HK Middle School Head Coach Diane Fucci feels that Mary made great strides with the Cougars and her change of scenery only further showcases her passion to the sport.

"I saw the girls make quite an improvement last year when Mary was coach. She's a great coach and will be a great asset to Guilford," says Fucci. "For her to go to Guilford, it shows her heart is definitely into coaching cheerleading."

Not fully into the fall season slate, Mary and her Indians are jelling perfectly together as a unit. She knows her Indians have a wish list that includes a full-time leader who will do nothing but enhance their abilities on and off the floor, and Mary meets their requirements.

"HK was a wonderful team, too, but this is a nice opportunity here. The girls wanted someone who will be there for them, and I'm not a bare-minimum coach," says Mary. "I want to expose them to beneficial opportunities both academically and athletically. This team I can see already is responsive and willing to do whatever is asked of them. They are all doing great so far."

While she is in the early phases of feeling out her new club, Mary is working towards getting to know how its members operate on a one-on-one basis. Yet she is confident that the solo work can eventually coincide with the entire team reaching new heights.

"I'm still in the assessing stages with this team and really starting from scratch," Mary says. "I am in the process of determining their individual needs, and then creating a plan that incorporates those needs with the team becoming one unit. In addition to that, I'm also all about safety first and working with them on technique. It's all about their needs and helping them through encouragement."
