Thomas Stephen Seligson

Tom Seligson, author and TV producer, passed away April 5, 2024 at his home in Deep River, with his wife Susan and daughter Justine at his side. Tom was born in New York City, Jan. 16, 1946.

His family moved from the Upper West Side to Westport in the early 1950s. He graduated from Phillips Academy, Andover, in 1964 and Columbia University in 1968. After many years of living in Manhattan, Tom moved back to Westport, where he and Susan raised Justine. They lived at Compo Beach for 23 years and then moved to Deep River, where they have lived for almost five years.

Throughout his professional life — which spanned six decades — he had many great achievements. He wrote six books (both fiction and non-fiction), one of which became the foundation for a major movie and its sequels. For 10 years, he was an executive producer at CBS News Productions. He produced hundreds of shows for several cable networks, winning three Emmy Awards and four Emmy nominations. He was also a print journalist and had bylines in major magazines. Despite his many successes, Tom remained humble. And in fact, if ever asked what he did, he would talk about a young man on death row whom he advocated for. To him, that was one of the most meaningful experiences of his life. Tom always took a keen interest in other people’s lives. He was highly social and well-loved in many circles.

Tom always sought out life’s wonderful adventures. He scuba dove around the world, climbed many mountains from the Dolomites to the Andes and even rode wild mustangs in Wyoming. He was always very athletic as an adult, playing tennis, cycling, skiing, hiking and recently, had taken up boxing to counter the effects of Parkinson’s Disease.

He is survived by his wife and partner of 27 years, Susan Farewell of Deep River; his daughter Justine Seligson of London, England; his sister Dr. Jane Sillman and her husband, Dr. Fred Sillman of Cambridge, Mass.; his twin brother Dr. Robert Seligson of Manhattan, New York; his nephew Eric Sillman and his wife Dr. Rebecca Johansson Locke of Brookline, Massachusetts, and their children: his niece, Kathy Sillman and her husband Ray Lewis of Newton, Massachusetts, and their children; as well as generations of friends and colleagues.

Details for a celebration of Tom’s life will be confirmed at a later date.
