Andrew Amarante

On Good Friday, March 29, 2024, Andrew A. “Andy” Amarante, 94, of Guilford, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by loved ones. Andy was born in New Haven on April 24, 1929, son of the late Antonio and Lucia Amarante.

Andy is survived by his wife of 67 years, Carmel “Lee” Amarante; and his three daughters, Lucy (Walter) Krauchick, Lisa Amarante and Karen (Lane) Tasto. He is also survived by six grandchildren: Kevin Krauchick, Ryan Krauchick, Brianna Oboikovitz-Tasto, Brittney Oboikovitz-Tasto, Shawna Bell, and Breanna Tasto; and nine great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by his brother and sisters, Madeline (Philip) Minichino, John (Ann) Amarante, Mary (Tony) Fraulo, Joseph (Anna) Amarante, Frank (Mary Girl) Amarante, Trifomena (Alphonse) Esposito and Nancy (Santo) Piersanti.

Andy grew up in New Haven, where he attended Wilbur Cross High School. He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy, where he served honorably and traveled the world on the USS Ingraham. When he returned from duty, he worked for the Southern Connecticut Gas Company in the Street Department, where he took great pride in his involvement with the company union up until his retirement.

Andy had a big heart and, above all, enjoyed spending time with his family. Some of his pastimes included playing bocce with Alfred DeMichele, getting Thursday morning breakfast with Anthony Amarante, Benedetto Minichino and Bobby Savino, and crabbing with his grandson Ryan and Anthony and Joanne Amarante. He loved to travel and visit his granddaughters in Florida. A fan of country music, Andy could always be heard singing and whistling his favorite tunes. Andy was a proud Italian American who enjoyed socializing with friends and family over a strong cup of espresso and a Napoleon pastry. He was a devout member of the St. George Catholic Church.

Family and friends may visit from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, April 5, at the Guilford Funeral Home, 115 Church Street in Guilford. The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 6, at St. George Catholic Church, 33 Whitfield Street in Guilford, followed by a burial at St. George Cemetery.
