He then worked at Bellmore-Johnson Tool Company for seven years before starting his own business, Guilford Engineering Associates, as a design engineer and also as an expert witness in firearms cases for many years.

Dave was an avid reader, and his other interests were in radio-controlled model-making, hunting, and fishing. Toward the end of his life, Dave liked going to the Guilford Recreation Center for lunch, where he would be able to spend time with the friends that he made there.

Dave is predeceased by his loving wife, Marie L. Findlay, who died in 2015 after spending 60 years together. He is also predeceased by his son, Erik J. Findlay of New Haven, in 2011. He is survived by his children, David S. (Donna) Findlay of Troy, Alabama, Sharon (Arunas) Jonynas of Chester, Vermont, daughter-in-law Nancy Ovedovitz (Erik) of Hamden and Mark Findlay of Hamden.
