Patricia Whiteman

Patricia L. (Scully) Whiteman, 80, of Clinton, died peacefully in her home on Dec. 24, 2023, after a long, strong battle with cancer. The weeks leading up to her passing were filled with visits from so many loved ones, which she said made her feel so special. Cherished time was also spent with close family who were with her in her final hours.

Patricia (more lovingly known as Pat, Patty, Patsy, Mom, and Ma) was born May 29, 1943, to Clifford Thomas Whiteman and Dorothy Swift Whiteman (Bartman). She was the seventh of their eight children. Born in Guilford with roots in both Madison and Clinton, Pat settled in Clinton and graduated from The Morgan School in 1961. Pat loved attending school dances and proms. She enjoyed being a member of Junior Achievement and playing the role of “Miss Penelope” in the school paper. She had fond memories of laughter, singing, joke telling, and shenanigans with her siblings, lifelong friends, and cousins during her youth. After graduating from high school, Pat went on to hairdressing school and became a hairdresser. She enjoyed being fashionable — the color purple, leopard prints, fun jewelry, and lipstick (a must no matter the occasion — even in her final days!).

Pat loved to be around people and was quite the social butterfly. Whether it was working the counters at ReXall or Bell’s Pharmacy or rocking customer service at The Wooden Spoon and Comcast (where she proudly earned a trip to California to walk the red carpet with her sister Dot at the movie premier of Eraser with Arnold Schwarzenegger!), she made friends wherever she went. She was known for her friendly smile, kindness, and warm heart. Over the years, friends, family, and neighbors would gather around her table to enjoy coffee, good conversation, and, of course, something sweet!

In addition to being a great friend, Pat was a wonderful sister, aunt, and cousin, but most of all, Pat was the most loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother! She shared that the biggest highlight of her life was “having her three wonderful children.” Later, that love grew with each grandchild and her great-granddaughter.

Pat is survived by her daughter Maureen Scully Tranquilli (Edwin) of North Branford and her son William Patrick Scully (Tina) of Clinton; her grandchildren: Jade Vergalitto (Chris/CJ Dwyer), Joseph Vergalitto (Savannah), William R. Scully, Sean Scully, Nicholas Tranquilli, Nathan Tranquilli and Brendan Scully; and her one and only great-granddaughter, Willow Dwyer who was truly the apple of her eye! Pat is also survived by three siblings, Gordon Whiteman (Andrea) of Guilford, Mary (Betty) Abel of Guilford, and Diane Schmidt (Tom) of Mentor, Ohio, as well as many cousins, in-laws, nieces, nephews, and friends. Pat was predeceased by both of her parents; five of her siblings: Tommy, Gibby, Dot, Wilma, and Gregg; and her beloved daughter Tricia Scully, whom she missed greatly since her passing, the person she looked most forward to being reunited with.

A Mass in her honor will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, 2024, at Christ Episcopal Church in Guilford. Her burial will be private.
