Nile Barrett


Nile Ripley Bassett Barrett of Westbrook passed away on Dec. 9, 2023, in Middletown. Funeral services were held on Dec. 19 at the Westbrook Congregational Church, with a remembrance gathering in Fellowship Hall afterward.

Nile was born in Amityville, New York, to Phillip E. and Mariday Bassett on April 21, 1943. She graduated from Central Connecticut State University with her bachelor’s and Southern Connecticut State University with her master’s degrees. Nile was an accomplished artist in many mediums, including watercolor, acrylic, oil, pen and ink, and relief printing. She was a skilled needle artist in quilting, sewing, needlework, and wool applique. She also dabbled in leatherworking with her son. Nile enjoyed teaching art in schools and privately, even after her retirement. She was an active member of many local art associations, guilds, social clubs, and historical societies. Nile was an essential participant in many volunteer organizations.

She loved the beach, boating with her brother, anything to do with the sea, traveling, and spending time with her family and friends. Nile was an 18th-century living history reenactor with her family.

Nile was predeceased by her husband, Robert S. Barrett, and her parents. She is survived by her son Morgan, his wife Heidi, and their sons Colton and Connor; daughter Marlow, her husband Dan, and their sons Cooper and Brodie; brother Phillip J Bassett, his wife Gail; niece Brooke Hilyard, her husband Jay, and their sons Owen and Drew; nephew Wesley Griggs Bassett; and niece Carlene Barrett and her husband Charles “Chuck.” Nile was truly loved by those who knew her well. She will be missed dearly by so many who found her infectious smile and laughter intoxicating.
