Barbara Glendenning Platt


Barbara Glendenning Platt, 92, died peacefully on Nov. 8, 2023, at her home in North Branford.

Born in Manhattan, Barbara grew up in Larchmont, New York, and graduated from Mamaroneck High School. She received her bachelor of arts in English at St. Lawrence University in upstate New York, where she was a member of the Laurentian Singers and also crowned homecoming queen. After college, Barbara enjoyed living with dear friends in New York City and working at UNESCO and Time Magazine.

Barbara met and married Henry L. Platt and moved to Pennsylvania in 1960. They lived together in Waverly for 53 years, where they raised three children. A self-described “domestic engineer,” Barbara was an active member of the community, volunteering in schools, with the Waverly Community House, Covenant Presbyterian Church of Scranton, and also her alma mater, St. Lawrence. Barbara loved skiing and playing tennis, golf, and bridge with her family and many friends.

For the last ten years, Barbara and Hank have been living in a retirement community in North Branford.

Barbara was the daughter of Charles E. Glendenning and Mildred (Bispham) Glendenning of Madison. In addition to her parents, Barbara was predeceased by her brother, Charles Glendenning, Jr.

Surviving in addition to Hank is brother George H. Glendenning and his wife Nancy of Niantic; loving children, Anne P. Khudari, Elizabeth L. Platt, and Jeffrey B. Platt; son-in-law Omar H. Khudari and daughter-in-law Lisa B. Platt; four grandchildren: Melaina Khudari, Matthew Khudari, Austin Platt and Serena Platt, and several beloved nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at a later date in Waverly, Pennsylvania. In lieu of flowers, donations in Barbara’s memory may be made to the Barbara G. Platt Study Abroad Fund at St. Lawrence University, 23 Ramoda Drive, Canton, NY 13617, or the Covenant Presbyterian Church, 816 Olive Street, Scranton, PA 18510.
