10/20/2023 01:30 PMThomas Ezequelle “Tom” Magera, 80, of Madison, passed away on Oct. 7. His beloved wife, Cheryl Wilczynski Magera, and his loving son, Thomas Gilmore “Gil” Magera, were at his side. Born in Ossining, New York, on Feb. 1, 1943, Tom was a devoted son. His parents, Rudolph and Elizabeth Ezequelle Magera, predeceased him.
A 1960 graduate of West Haven High School, Tom was a member of the tennis and hockey teams. He continued to play tennis at New Haven College (now University of New Haven) while earning two engineering degrees (1962 and 1966). While attending college, Tom began a more than 30-year career with the G&O Manufacturing Company in New Haven in Engineering and Cost Accounting. As part of his responsibilities, he traveled to the G&O facilities in California and Mississippi. After G&O, Tom took a position at Dana in Branford (Echlin Manufacturing). In 2017, Tom retired from United Technologies (Pratt & Whitney) after 15 years of service. As a senior manager, he worked with fiscal planning analysis and cost reduction as part of the F-22 Raptor engine team and other programs. Tom welcomed the challenges of each position, mentoring young engineers and accountants.
Tom enjoyed time with his family. Disney trips were a favorite and often included a niece or nephew. Always supportive of his son Gil’s activities, Tom was a fixture at each hockey game or track meet. Trips to Casey Key, Florida, by train to visit his grandparents were much-anticipated each year. His grandfather, Poppa Ray, introduced young Tommy to fishing and clamming. Tom continued fishing and clamming on Cape Cod during family vacations. When a friend introduced him to amateur radio, Tom quickly learned Morse code and became an active participant in the contests held by the Amateur Radio Relay League. Contest weekends became filled with Morse code and callsigns going worldwide, Tom as N1TM and formerly KA1CZF . . . now, sadly, a “silent key.”
